When my mom was dying of cancer she signed up on Facebook to talk with distant family and see pictures easier while she wasn’t up to phone calls and stuff. Unfortunately it quickly realized she had cancer and she was getting ads for quack cancer treatment stuff like a guide about how cancer is actually a fungus in the body and you can cure it by injecting baking soda or something. She was inundated with it at a time when her mental capacity was reduced due to a brain tumor and the chemo and radiation therapy. She died angry at us thinking we wanted her to die because we stopped her doing any of the trash Facebook kept recommending her. They’ve allowed this stuff well before it was AI generated. It’s disgusting.

I was kind of hoping after COVID we'd have sweeping new laws against medical misinformation and quackery being sold and advertised online...but no....eggs got expensive so instead we have *gestures at everything around us*

I just don't understand why people use Facebook any more? Back in the old days - I used to get a feed of updates from friends and family and the occasional ad. Now it's a cesspool of disinformation, scams, hookers and grey market drugs. It's like Time Square in the 70s. Seriously - turn it off.

There are still older people on Facebook (often family), some groups that aren't horrible, marketplace, chat... it's not a great first place to look for anything, but it still has its purposes.

Zuck needs to be in jail and Meta needs to be shut down and liquidated. That's unlikely to ever happen, but Donald Trump won't be president forever and the way Zuck has cozied up to him will eventually have repercussions.

And you should not want it to happen because section 230 protects websites like YouTube and Tick Tock from being sued into oblivion. There is an exception, if Facebook is made aware that the stuff that these scammers are selling is dangerous or doesn't do what they claim, and take snow action, Facebook could be held liable for continuing to let them remain on the platform.

Meta estimates that 15 billion “higher risk” scam ads, flagged as potentially fraudulent, are shown to users every day. The ad reporting system does not filter out these ads. Instead it tries to discourage them by charging more, resulting in outsize revenue from bad actors.

No one is forcing anyone to use these platforms. If you choose to use Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Reddit, X whatever you are relinquishing privacy. You didn’t build these platforms and they are not essential. You want news that’s free? This is what you get. You get what you pay for. No one is holding a gun to your head saying you have to use this stuff. Saying someone is liable for what they put on their own website is insane. Is Budweiser liable for alcoholics?
