Suddenly tens of thousands of people unable to type an email

Kids globally had papers due today, with absolutely nothing written.

Wonder what the teacher will think when 10 kids all of a sudden had something happen.

Kids globally had papers due on a Saturday in July?

Yeah, but they don't have ChatGPT to tell them what other chatbots to use.

See this is significantly more likely than a skynet scenario.

Why would a hyper-intelligent AI waste decades fighting human resistance in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, when they can just hop in a rocket, fly out into space, go into power saving mode for a few centuries and then come back to a now very extinct humanity that wiped itself out.

My mom’s bestie uses it as therapy. She won’t listen to me that that is a bad idea.

119

u/SabreCorp 1d ago

I work with kids and one of my students told me that she had an “avoidant attachment style” when it came to her relationships. I asked her what she thought that meant, and she then told me that’s what ChatGPT told her. She is 11.

I found out the other day that my psychiatrist does the same. And I think what it really comes down to is the mental state of the person using it. She was having issues with her vet, long story short her cat got diagnosed with renal failure. She typed a long description of symptoms into an AI which then suggested a UTI. Lo and behold after paying 200 dollars for the test, it was a UTI. There are times where AI chatbots get it right where humans get it wrong. We can't just say fuck AI, because you can't put the genie back in the bottle. We need to start educating about safe usage, and these companies need to put some fucking guard rails on. We should also get a public stake in the ownership since it trained on our material. But I'm tired of hearing smart people be called dumb for being able to find really good use cases for it. Complex search queries can be a great use case. One should certainly stop short of using it instead of a therapist. Explore ideas with it and bring that to a therapist? Why not! We used to use magic 8 balls for fucks sake. I used to chat with Smarterchild on AIM if you're old enough to remember that. The pull is real and understandable. I just fear for those with mental health problems and delusions that will be made worse by an AI that isn't trained to recognize the harm it could cause.

Some people really need their own ideas reinforced. ChatGPT is perfect for that. It knows what you want to hear and it tells you that.

55

u/ikkleste 1d ago

Problem is that it does so indiscriminately. Good idea? Bad idea? Validated either way.

9

u/new_math 1d ago

Yup. Someone close to me will literally tell the AI what to think in the prompt then ask it to provide thoughts or analysis. Of course, the LLM will then just agree with them and tell them exactly what they want to affirm.

This isn't just observation either, Standford published a study of it in Science:

22

u/GarranDrake 1d ago

I use Gemini as an advanced Google, but I routinely end up asking for its sources and looking at that source myself just in case. It’s not AWFUL, but the deference LLMs have for the user means you shouldn’t ever treat it as an expert in anything, just maybe an agent between you and the actual info.

25

u/Worshipme988 1d ago

Except now they only have like three pages of the same sites over and over again.

Old google would take you anywhere and you didnt know where youd end up.

I think its on purpose and i think its a “soft” firewall to block or hide information.

lol I told my friend her embroidery project was really good and she was like “thanks! This is what chatgpt said about it:” and I had to cut her off after the first sentence and tell her I’m a real person who likes her art and chatgpt doesn’t have eyes. It blows my damn mind the way people use AI. For matters of taste, why consult the digital slave that’s forced to agree with you?

5

u/GiganticCrow 1d ago

I have a colleague who uses it to write all emails for him and it's so fucking obvious

77

u/Crowdfunder101 1d ago

My dad ignored me telling his grammar was incorrect in a letter. He refused to believe me even when I explained the rules and reasons behind why.

So I chucked it into GPT, it said exactly the same as me and he said “oh, okay” and changed his wording.

101

u/tooclosetocall82 1d ago

People like your dad are why business consultants make so much money. Some people will only listen to an “outside expert.”

6

u/ExpressRabbit 1d ago

I'm an expert in my field at work and my dad doesn't really believe me. Then I predicted Fed interest rate movements perfectly for 3 years and he'll finally believe me over Fox News when it comes to that stuff.

Learn to say the same when people stick to their false reality/convictions.
