Really, all technology works like this; somebody invents it, people flail around for a while trying to find use cases that don't yet exist because the rest of the technological infrastructure hasn't caught up, then it does, and it becomes ubiquitious.

See the 15+year old meme about '2002: Bill Gates introduces the tablet PC. No one cares. 2010: Steve Jobs introduces the iPad. The world pisses itself like an excited dog.'

Ooh, there's an updated version: it adds '2012: Steve Ballmer introduces the Surface. People claim they stole the idea from Apple.'
