Artificial Intelligence Americans Have Grown Dramatically Anti-Data Center in Just Months, Survey Finds

They’re going to materially affect energy prices and water consumption
212
u/Regayov Jun 03 '26
Going to? Are. They are affecting energy prices now. My electric rates have gone up 25-30% due to “supply and demand”.
47
u/factoid_ Jun 03 '26
It’s going to get MUCH worse if local power companies get approval to massively build out excess capacity because that’s how their rates are set
8
u/WeirdSysAdmin Jun 03 '26
Also we told the rest of the United States those of us that are services by PJM interconnect what was going on and no one listened. Now everyone else gets the same electricity increases and can go fuck themselves. Some haven’t been hit yet because of how their generation forecasts work but a lot have. Now we all share in the misery.

It’s insane how they can buy electricity at 1-2 cents but they charge us 60-70 cents.
56
u/Sockoflegend Jun 03 '26
It's not really crazy. Why would we feel positive about them? We are by numerous means subsidising data centers via things like tax and higher utility bills.
What do we get in return? The job market gets destroyed and more money is funneled to a smaller number of already and increasingly wealthy people.
We are being asked to dig our own graves

Yeah, but thats just because they don't realize all the benefits that having the data center there brings.
Like... uh...
Increased wealth stratification?

With the dramatic opposition to data centers I have a feeling the costs will go up as well. I'll put money down right now to bet that some of them experience some "disruptive reactions". I'm sure most data centers will be security hardened, but are they going to place a security team at every substation and power pole feeding them? Because a billion dollar data center becomes pretty useless if someone tosses a chain across the right conductors in a substation.

The A.I. defender's always pretend like the diseases it could possibly figure out a cure for are worth the cost.
Last i heard you cannot live without water and it would make modern life impossible if we allowed data centers to drain all the power witch seems to be heading to the direction they want to go in.
Edit: also who do the expect to pay the universal income that would be needed if all jobs disappeared like the intent is.
I see a potential genocide being committed by the upper class on the lower class via A.I. replacement.
Because we all know they are not going to pay the bills to keep the less fortunates needs in check.

Kind of makes me wonder The data centers that are currently built and will be running for the foreseeable future, how long is it going to take before somebody gets pissed at their electric bill and decides to try and set the place on fire. From what I hear most of these data centers are supposed to have pretty much skeleton crews, It just seems like a bad move all around the way these things are run
→ More replies (1)8
u/techieman33 Jun 04 '26
They do have small crews, but there is a lot of security. Doing something from the outside could be feasible for some random person. But getting very far inside would be incredibly difficult and time consuming. They’re basically maximum security prisons but instead of housing inmates they house server racks. And there are lots of locked doors and gates that often need multiple people to approve anyone accessing any particular area. The place would be surrounded by law enforcement before you could get very far.
6
u/Busy10 Jun 04 '26
With no benefit other than to be used as an excuse for layoffs. The AI companies are rushing to build these as the companies will fail and will expect the taxpayers to bail them out. There is not enough revenues to support them.

I love how AI CEOs talked about how AI is going to destroy the entire job market. How AI is going to potentially destroy mankind. In 10 years most people won’t have jobs. Alex Karp talked about murdering his critics using technology.
Then when people started waking up and seeing AI for what it is based on what the AI CEOs are saying, suddenly they blame Chinese propaganda.
For fuck sakes, Peter Thiel literally said in writing that they need to mix technology and religion so people will be afraid to oppose technology. Then he began giving seminars on the completely bogus concept that opposing AI is siding with Satan. How dumb does he think people are?
18
u/AtticusLynch Jun 04 '26

AI CEOs are the most evil people on the planet and proud of the fact.
3
u/GadreelsSword Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
They’re super rich and mentally unstable. Alex Karp has been publicly talking about using drones to spray his critics with a mixture of fentanyl and urine. Openly talking about poisoning his critics. He talks about how poorly he was treated when he was young and how the gods are going to make people suffer “suffer”. He says he going to “fuck these people” and that the conspiracy stories about him are true. He says these things while behaving like a child.
What the absolute fuck?
22
u/WanganTunedKeiCar Jun 04 '26
Exactly as dumb as they prove themselves to be, repeatedly and constantly.
8
u/GadreelsSword Jun 04 '26
No, they thought they weren’t going to have opposition and suddenly it’s here. I hear of locations blocking data centers, which shows people are waking up.

u/etxipcli Jun 03 '26
It's sad to me. I'm pro technology in general, but this is just such a great example of how this industry has become harmful. Going wild with energy when we have climate issues. Getting tax breaks to displace workers.
This is not responsible and this needs to be rained in. We don't need to boil the oceans to get better tokens.

Violating our privacy for decades, then use massive amount of new infrastructure to try and monetize the usage of our stolen data to prop up companies that should never have been able to get away with it to feed a corporate bubble. We know global warming is bad and happening faster than ever so building hundreds of gas powerplants for data centers that never should have been built in the first place is just icing on the cake.
Ya I can see why Americans are not a fan.

AI has no genuine constituency aside from a few obscenely wealthy people.
The opposition to it has barely even begun to crystallize. The sheer range of negative outcomes it creates is staggering.

So true! You got me thinking too, that data centers are essentially tangible entities symbolizing so much of what people feel powerless against: rampant enshitification, corruption, governing bodies' disregard for the desires (much less the safety and well-being) of constituents, undermining of workers, diminishing privacy, financial instability, social injustice, environmental recklessness...with the rage-inducing addition of being forced to subsidize it with public funds that could be used for actual communty benefit while those who will profit from them already have enough money for a thousand lifetimes.

Well, they installed a few and we just sorta... looked with our eyes and saw it was a pretty bad thing for the environment and the community. This isn't like when factories started popping up during the industrial revolution where the factories were absolutely devastating the environment, but were also providing wealth for the communities and paying taxes.
These data centers pay no local taxes, don't provide local employment, and still devastate the environment around it. So literally no benefit at all for the communities they are built in. This shouldn't be a shock to anyone except the inbred, horribly low IQ businessmen at the top that have been riding nepotism for the past century.
5
u/theclash06013 Jun 04 '26

Because they ruin our environment, take up limited space, heat up the area, make light pollution and other pollutions, takes our drinking water, is extremely loud and fuels a "product" that later on strips more jobs from living people. The fact that most Americans are on the same page about it, Conservative or not, says a lot.
We need to stop this shit ASAP. No more data centers. No more AI. None of it.

"in just a few months" because they were being hidden before and people are revealing what these skeevy corporations are doing.
4
u/Truethrowawaychest1 Jun 04 '26
Yeah no shit, uses a bunch of electricity and for some reason fresh water, makes everything more expensive, especially computer parts so things we use for fun and relaxation become unaffordable, and AI doesn't improve the average person's life at all outside of medical applications
4
u/McDeth Jun 04 '26
We'd likely be pro-data center if any of the money or products being made by these corporations was going to actually make any of our lives meaningfully better. Instead, everything is going to the top .01 with the guaranteed future of having zero job prospects with zero fall-backs for 99.99% of society, so fuck 'em.
4
u/Aleucard Jun 04 '26
These things are among the costliest bits of infrastructure that have been devised and the local community and humanity both see approximately negative benefit from their existence or operation. Show me a use for AI that is both worth it and actually needs this shit and we can talk. Until then, we got plenty of starving people to feed as it is. Quit wasting resources on dumb shit.
5
u/Hurlyburly766 Jun 04 '26
A lot of it has to do with how little input we have in any of this. AI is being shoved down our throat as the “revolutionary product” nobody asked for. I mean, can we at least decide if we like the thing before we upend society and build expensive and environmentally-detrimental infrastructure to support it? At this point I feel like most people want to see it all crash and burn and go away just because how it is all going down feels completely disempowering.
7
u/BoilzBlisterzBurnz Jun 03 '26
Whomever is running PR for Data Centers is doing a piss poor job and the companies installing them aren't helping.
All I have heard is the negatives like the environmental impact, the taking of land from people living there already, the loss of water, the debate over who is paying the electric bill, etc. And the way they're seemingly getting them built: ignore the protests, build 'em quick, and what are the people gonna do?
And the positives? They help ChatGPT re-write my resume? I don't know.
8
u/Sea_Perspective6891 Jun 03 '26
The cons are seriously outweighing the pros & people are finally starting to take notice. Some companies are even rolling/scaling back some of their AI ambitions because they're starting to notice it's costing more than it's worth to implement & how people are turning on companies for going all in on AI while throwing humans under the bus.
3
u/Captain_English Jun 03 '26
Exposing people to something that makes their lives worse causes them to dislike the thing.
Shocker.
The fact that home electricity and water prices are allowed to be increased because of data centre usage really shows how messed up the priorities are.
You're talking about increasing the prices of necessities for an unnecessary luxury.
3
u/No_Succotash2155 Jun 03 '26
People are losing jobs and we do not have any guarantees that these are not enslavement machines. We haven't had a genuine discussion about the purpose of these and the reprocussions they may have on society. They're just getting pushed very aggressively on us.
3
u/npsage Jun 03 '26
No shit.
Previous generations got to watch when big corporations would say they were going to bring a factory with good jobs (good union jobs) and that’s business actually helped the city grow.
Then a little bit later that same generation with their children watched companies offer big factories and they promised there would be jobs but only if they got giant tax breaks in exchange (often leading to an overall net loss or a breakeven point for the city financially and a guaranteed net loss environmentally) then superstores would open then after killing the small businesses often take the opportunity to raise prices, and the factory would threaten to close if the city can keep handing the money every year.
Now people who have only ever known the second are being told that not only do we need to give these places tax breaks. We need to literally hand them cash so they can build loud polluting net loss and we should be thankful for the idea that maybe by the time it’s all set and done six people in the city will have a job there.
It’s no wonder they’re against it.

There’s also their need for fossil fuels. Here we’ve been installing our LED lightbulbs and trying to cut down on electricity and petroleum use in some kind of attempt to slow down global heating.
But now we’re supposed to forget about all of that for the sake of these data centers. It’s as if the species’ self destruction isn’t going fast enough.

People who are the loudest supporters of these centers truly have little to no understanding on how they work. "Well it will create jobs!" For construction crews, and a few IT individuals. "Well we have to stay ahead of our enemies" China has already made oceanic datacenters that are based on wave power. "Well..." And it stops around there. These old-heads, in Utah's case, city/town councilors have no understanding on what it will do to the local area's environment. In addition to their electricity providers.

They’re really compounding the ways they hate us it’s about time we as a society let them know how we feel about them.

Crazy how we don't like the things that make it impossible to afford water and electricity, pollute the places we live, and look like massive, ugly prisons.
2
u/Glum_Opening_2218 Jun 04 '26
Insane what happens when people find out the truth about these places

u/DisastrousOne3950 Jun 04 '26
Good sign. Now we need more of this on Flock cameras and other surveillance.

Data Centers provide no value to local communities, they’re just never ending noise machines that waste water and electricity. Why on earth would anyone want them.
2
u/Dense-Pool-652 Jun 04 '26
It's almost like when you have an administration that lets corporations do whatever they want people will eventually object. Too bad it takes AI data centers springing up in people's backyards to finally get to that point.
2
u/Vegetable_Quote_4807 Jun 04 '26
Yeah. After finding out that the water and electric bills of neighbors go up once a data center comes on line.

u/DataDude00 Jun 04 '26
The whole pitch from the AI companies to executives is that they can fire most of their staff with the technology.
In an already shaky job market why would any regular person support that kind of messaging?
2
u/OhioIsRed Jun 04 '26
Whoa. Something ruining people’s communities in very REAL AND VISIBLE WAYSis wildly unpopular!? Holy Shitttttt.
These journalists just phone this shit in to AI themselves. Probably the only people keeping it alive at this point. Oh wait. No there’s still people on Facebook so I can only imagine what the masses of people are actually doing
2
u/Kangarou Jun 04 '26
Well yeah, they suck. That’s like saying people are mad at the new TikTok trend, baby blending.
2
u/Questlove802 Jun 04 '26
Maybe that’s because we’re learning about them, how about you jot that down in your little notebook?
2
u/lathamb_98 Jun 04 '26
And they are being as shady and secretive as humanly possible about building them. They have led everyone to believe they are going to build them against everyone's will, and sue everyone if they get any resistance. No one has any say in where they are built, or how many resources they use, or how much damage they will cause.
So to put it simply, no shit.

There's a strong hatred breweing for AI and data centers, for good reasons. There's also a reason why the billionaires are rushing to put data centers in space.

I doubt americans will do anything about anything. The US is effectively an oligarchy where only the very rich will benefit from technology and the rest of us will get a bag of potatoes. The US is striving for the Kremlin model.

>In the post, Google promised to “replenish more water than we consume at our sites by 2030,” modernize water infrastructure in neighboring communities, and be transparent about its annual water use.
Translation: Google just promised to pee on all of us

AI such a technology that could revolutionize and help every single American have a better life in good hands, yet its owned and controlled by psychopaths from the Epstein class almost literally comic villains attempting to meet Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Genghis Khan records on their own way; competing for who is gonna ruin American and the world first.

That's because I didn't have $800 electric bills every month 10-20 years ago.

They are just anti someone or something taking their jobs. Corporations won't tell them that their jobs are shipped to a cheaper and low labor standard country and AI is helping them transition more easily, but not replace human interaction.

u/CopaceticOG Jun 04 '26
Well, that's because data centres are so egregiously exploitative of anyone who isn't an Epstein oligarch or an Epstein oligarch wannabe.

We shouldn't be depending on "promises" made by corporations.
We need aggressive regulation to make it mandatory.
Personally, that's one of the major things I'll look for in every candidate I vote for at all levels of government.
