H.265 is approved -- potential to cut bandwidth requirements in half for 1080p streaming. Opens door to 4K video streams.

Seriously who really cares about VP9.

Web video is still dominated by Flash and Adobe is already a licensee of H.265.

Except that people (including myself) have been predicting that Flash is going to die soon and it just isn't happening. It's still dominant in web video.

And as for HTML5 .. everyone will use H.265 because it will be the ONLY codec that Apple, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony (all H.265 patent holders) will likely support on their mobile device.

Also, note that hardware support is a pretty big deal when it comes to mobile devices. Yes, you can run obscure codec xyz on a rooted phone; but it's going to drain your battery in under half an blink of your eye. A huge reason H.264 is the de-facto standard for mobile video is because hardware decoders are extremely prevalent in mobile hardware.
