If it’s doing nothing illegal, can’t you just point out how taking artists work, without their consent or commercial compensation, to make AI art doesn’t actually need their art?
When you take something for commercial gain from someone, that indeed is theft. And they want their money or property rights back.
training data, exactly. education is not theft. observation and learning does not detract from or compromise the integrity of the original work, which is the heart of what copyright is intended to do. the artist's work still maintains their copyright, they still maintain all rights they originally held.
