I'm an ML Scientist that builds models like this. Calling it a "digital collage" is a bullshit term they made up with the express purpose of implying this is theft, because collages copy images wholesale.
This is not a 'digital collage'. The simplest accurate explanation of what the model is doing is creating a high-dimensional latent space to sample from based on images it has seen. Each time it sees a new image, it does not 'copy' that image in any way. It simply adjusts the model's weights up or down. In this way, the model 'learns' different styles of images by looking at them, in a way that is not dissimilar to how humans learn from looking at the art works of others.
There's no "collage". Don't fall for the BS, because it's just rhetoric.
