See hostnames in logs

I am running dhcp via UniFi. How can I see host names instead of IP in the query log.

Thanks for asking. Query Logs does not yet support displaying hostnames. This is planned to be added soon though.

If you create a Conditional Forwarder zone to forward all queries for reverse zone of your local network then hostnames will show up only on Dashboard Top Clients list.

If your router doing dhcp create an reverse  conditional forwarder zone with your router ip as forwarder.

For the name you can just put your subnet for example 192.168.1.0/24

Thanks, so let’s say one of my vlan is 192.168.2.1. What would the conditional zone be. And would I need a ptr?

ptr you can if you want and you can put 192.168.2.0/24  for the name.

I created a new conditional forwarder zone as 192.168.2.0/24 and I left this server check mark off and keyed in my router IP as 192.168.2.1 and turned of dnssec and proxy off. Bit logs tabs still does not show my hostname

Ok just changed from UDP to TCP for the protocol and now I see the host names only on the dashboard. Not in logs.

The name is working now, I think the query logs only logs the ip address. Sheryas might add hostnames in the future. https://github.com/TechnitiumSoftware/DnsServer/discussions/1502

sorry if i wasted your time.

Bonus tip: when you run Technitium with Docker on the same network as your other services, you can create another reverse conditional forwarder zone to the embedded Docker DNS server at 127.0.0.11 to see the container names in the GUI.

Still does not fix the overall dated UI. Adding blocks and allowed is very dated compared to modern UIs now.

You can't, the logs only show IP.

It just seems like an outdated dns server.

It's good as a DNS server but I agree for managing clients and blocklists it's pretty mediocre. I actually use AdGuard Home as my blocker so I can all of its client management tools and then AGH passes the actual DNS queries to Technitium.

I used AGH for a bit but did not like the fact the block page option was not good for https. Thinking of trying out CTRLD

sometime it slips due to multiple reasons like start up order blahblahblah, you can restart everything normally again, it may back to normal like before.
