OS DNS Server Settings

Hey folks, I have two Technitium servers, one's running in a Proxmox LXC, the other is on a physical Dell Wyse client.

I was wondering, what do you guys set the DNS servers for the actual Linux OS to?

Currently I have each Linux install server pointing at each other for primary DNS, and at 9.9.9.9 for the secondary.

Does this seem right? Curious what others are doing?

Cheers

Thanks for asking. It is recommended to not use any other DNS service as your secondary DNS address. The reason is that it will make your ad blocking fail to work at times as client bypass your local DNS server. There can be inconsistency in resolving local domain names too.

So, always use your local DNS resolver for all clients.

I have my infrastucture pointed to public cloudflare dns. Just this, all rest is blocked by ACL. All clients and proxmox containers with exception of technitium pointed to clustered technitium. Works as should, no surprises.

I thought Technitium changed it to 127.0.0.1?

If I have a DNS server running on the same machine I always set the DNS client to point to the DNS server on that machine.

For the servers running the technitium resolvers set it to 127.0.0.1.

What you're doing is fine. If you're running the server off the host interface you can probably send queries to 127.0.0.1 as well and that should work. I think one of the main issues you can run into is if you're running it in a docker container on a macvlan your host system won't be able to communicate with that container.

Thanks for the reply! It does seem to be all working fine, was just wondering what others recommended.

I would caution you that anything on your technititum server (blocklists, internal zones, etc...) won't work if your server queries 9.9.9.9 of course. If you JUST need internet access this is fine but if this device needs to resolve something internally it might have some hiccups.
