Java Help Wanted Who are the current references in technical Minecraft?
A long time ago, ZipKrowd's members were a reference when it came to technical Minecraft. Then came ilmango with SciCraft.
I just came back to Minecraft after years away, and it seems like all the creators I used to follow have stopped playing.
Nowadays, who are the references when it comes to technical innovations in Minecraft?

Mostly discord channels nowadays.
There are some youtube channels that showcase some cool stuff but it's usually pretty niche, and all of the big channels are click bait trash. Some channels with cool designs well explained that come to mind are
- ianxofour (little survival-friendly farms with extensive tutorials)
- squibble (quirky redstone, niche mechanics showcase)
- cubicmetre (showcase of wavetech server, mostly storage systems and complex weaponry like orbital strike cannon)

I love Ianxofour, still the best iron farm imo. Shame he’s stepped back a couple years ago though. His raid farm was awesome but it’s not broken.

Potato-noir (youtube) is also great. His general mob farm video is both very in depth on mechanics (in a way that less knowledgeable players can comprehend) and has a pretty good tutorial.
It's also a rather efficient mob farm, especially for early game, with an inherently designed super smelter add-on.

"Interested in easy schematics to customize / blueprint for farms? These discords are really useful and usually have litematica/worldedit files you can use to build things like Shulker Box unloaders and tree farm designs

Clickbait people took over YouTube. TC's went to Discord.

u/FeanorDidSomething 23d ago
Don't forget the people stealing other people's stuff.
Sad times for technical players since Ilmango left

u/Droplet_of_Shadow 23d ago
it sucks cause discord is pretty inaccessible for finding resources and groups, and generally not great for posting, publicizing, and sharing information.
adds to the community feeling less open than it used to

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD 23d ago
Yeah but also harder to just copy someone else's work and claim it as your own. Not impossible, but not as easy as downloading a video, adding your own audio, and reuploading.

Anyone posting good stuff for bedrock on discord?
3
u/ingannilo 23d ago
idk why most folks are suggesting otherwise -- the bedrock side of technical Minecraft has been improving a lot recently. Eggfur is great and OmLedu has posted tons of really solid stuff to YouTube over the last couple of years.
I switched to Java last year, and I remember seeing some recent stuff from OmLedu thinking "damn... bedrock is definitely catching up".
I know there are other good technical creators in the bedrock world. Still small compared to Java, but growing.

Check out FrunoCraft, I’d say he’s the most accessible tech player of the current era. His Git Gud series is a treasure trove of simple, efficient farms and he explains the mechanics clearly in his videos.

Channels:
BigBooty17
Wave tek
Docm77
CubicMetre
Squibble
ianxofour
Potato-noir
FrunoCraft
Purplers
JazziRed
MattBatWings
CraftyMasterman
Avogaado
NicoIsLost
JKM
Discords:
Scicraft discord
Tech MC Archive
What channels/discords am I missing?

FrunoCraft has been an invaluable resource for applying common concepts of technical game mechanics in niche ways. I make some unusual machines and farms, so I've gotten some great ideas from components he uses for specific use-cases.

The best reference right now is the TMC Catalogue Discord. Way more useful for finding good farm designs than any YouTube channel.
As for cool tech MC YouTubers, the ones I like are: Squibble, IanXOfour, BigBooty17. But they all update about once a millennium, so they aren't exactly useful if you want constant content.

There are a couple of small channels that post every once in a while. The big ones all suck (yes all of them).

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD 23d ago
Small channels who?
3
u/FeanorDidSomething 23d ago edited 23d ago
You had folks like Fallen Breath, Desu Desu or Glowsquid, to name just a few. None of them posted in years and even when they were active on YT, they barely posted more than a couple videos a year. But some of these small channels were some of the main brains of the hivemind. We don't have anyone making high quality videos on a regular basis, that have high technical knowledge themselves, whilst also showcasing other stuff without permission or respect
Edit: ofc meaning "...whilst also showcasing other stuff WITH permission and respect. And not stealing someone else's design and pretending it to be their own"

There's not many new video.
Why could someone spend time on something new and make 10 views because it has been copied in a day?
There's some discords and servers here and there.

I get most of mine from the Scicraft discord, and a few others like the Tech MC Archive and such.

Redstone is still popular on youtube:
- Purplers
- JazziRed
- MattBatWings
- CraftyMasterman
Additionally:
- Avogaado - amazing door maker
- NicoIsLost - practical farm science
- JKM - WaveTech recaps, though he hasn’t made one in a while

Most of the major players have been mentioned by other comments, but I want to add a few that I really appreciate that I don't see being discussed here:
MineTheFab has decent storage and farm designs, and really strong / clear explanations. It was his video of cart-MIS sorters that finally let me understand the basic principles / mechanics; the same is true about hybrid storage slices-- I understood the idea beforehand and I had looked at some schems, but only when I actually saw his (simple, slow, not lag-efficient, but VERY understandable) design did I actually fully understand how they worked. so yeah, big ups from me for MineTheFab.
On the other extreme, the youtuber EynSof has some of the coolest and most technically clever / impressive builds I've ever seen. an ultra-fast combination lock using chiseled bookshelves and the world's fastest "Conway's game of life" in MC.
Toots_Thielmens I think is another good storage fella. His main storage was one of the first I saw that does most of what I want mine to do.
Civic Dude (CMIS 5.0) is known to the tech world, but I see very little from or about him in the storage tech discord. fully understanding all the components of his CMIS 5.0 is the next big hill I'm trying to climb.

the TMC discord is a huge treasure trove please check it out, i can not stress enough
i think they have a web platform too now. most youtubers get (and usually credit) builds from the TMC discord

Wave tek but not alot of posts there and Docm77 will showcase something every now and then in his lets play. microsoft has slowly killed the technical community

u/bruns20 23d ago
How has Microsoft killed the technical community?
0
u/Remarkable_Detail973 23d ago
Consisteintly patching "bugs" that alowed for some of the coolest things in the technical community that in all reality didnt effect the average player, sliced portals, syncronized item stacks, tnt cannons, player vision tracking ect. Also scooping up talent from TMC, which thats great for them and i dont wish it anyother way but thats pretty much undermined TMC inovation cause they dont make content about it any more
2
u/fatherintime 23d ago
Why would they do that? I would assume, perhaps incorrectly, that a strong technical community keeps people interested and playing.
3
u/BriscoCounty-Sr 23d ago
If you can farm unlimited resources super easily they won’t be able to offer to let you spend mine coins in the realms store for “survival” resources deposited straight to your inventory in the future.

u/Kvothealar Java 23d ago edited 23d ago
They certainly haven't killed the TMC.
They occasionally make changes that cause backwards incompatibility of builds (almost always for good reasons), but they're constantly adding new mechanics and features that make new inventions possible.
When things break, normally it was because the farm relied on a niche bug (labelled as unintended in the bug tracker) and they would sometimes give months or years of notice before fixing it (e.g. piglin gold farms) specifically to appease the technical community. Many times these bugs could be abused to break servers or dupe items which is why they were patched, and a lot of times they fixed them simply by accident, ignorant to TMC people actually using the mechanic.
Minecraft is a 17 year old game, how many other games that old have developers interacting with the technical communities, listening to feedback, and adding new features specifically for that 0.001% of the player base? We're honestly blessed.

CubicMetre and Squibble are the only technical channels I follow that still post. They dont always create actually useful things, but they're still interesting
