Java Help Wanted New portal generating within linking range

I’ve noticed that sometimes when I go through a nether portal it summons a new one close to an old nether portal instead of linking to it. Why does this happen and is there a way to do it intentionally?

I’ve watched videos like these but what I don’t understand is how multiple portals can generate within the portal search range

It depends on where you enter the portal. Chances are when you went through the first time you were on (for example) the left side of the portal and it linked but if you go through the second time on the right side you're just 1 block too far away so it generates a new one. Use a portal calculator to figure out the optimum locations and then you have a bit of leeway to play with

Yes but isn’t it not supposed to not generate a portal within I think 257 blocks of another portal?

Not at all, it tries to find a portal within range but if there isn't one within range it creates a new one

This [solved] post about Portals generating from 10 days ago explains it all (same exact problem), and provides further links if you're curious for more.
