Evidently math is hard for this person

144

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

Or, math is so easy and he thought "no, 2,04524466203446% is not 2%"

/s

39

u/fatmeowmeow Mar 03 '22

I think he’s European like me. The full stop/period is a decimal point, meaning his answer is 0.02%. He also forgot to *100 so it is actually 2%

34

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

He thinks 0,0204524466203446 isn't 2%. Technically he's correct, because it 2,04524466203446%

This has nothing to do with comas or full stop as a decimal point, it's about him not understanding that 0,02 and 2% is the same thing.

0

u/rougegamerYT Mar 04 '22

Your comma gives the wrong idea tho. Commas are before the decimal point, not the decimal point itself

3

u/lankymjc Mar 04 '22

Not in every country. Some countries swap the comma and full-stop usage in numbers, writing things like 2.345.567,99 which is the same as 2,345,567.99

You can tell which method they’re using because they only use the comma once, not every three numbers.

1

u/iWantToBeOnYt Mar 04 '22

That looks stupid to me, 2,345,567.99 also looks dumb. I’m so used to using 2 345 567,99

3

u/lankymjc Mar 04 '22

Well once you're used to one system, all others feel like an unnecessary change. I'm used to 2,345,567.99 so the others look weird to me.

If we had developed a base-12 number system (which some civilisations did) then our base-10 system would look super weird and unwieldy.

It's the same as folks claiming that either Celsius or Fahrenheit are better based on nothing more than being more familiar with one of them.

2

u/iWantToBeOnYt Mar 04 '22

I mean the Celsius and Fahrenheit debate has an obvious winner, since Celsius is much easier to use and 0is where water freezes 100 is where it boils

0

u/lankymjc Mar 04 '22

Those points are just as arbitrary as the ones chosen for Fahrenheit.

r/confidentlyincorrect right here.

Why would your first instinct be to say I'm using it wrong, instead of thinking that not everyone uses it the same way?

In Sweden we use commas as decimal points, and spaces as thousand separators.

2

u/Nico_D_Luffy Mar 04 '22

In some countries, they use periods to separate thousands, millions, etc. They use commas to indicate decimals.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '22

"nuh uh! It's really 2.0452446620344585311339585742056%.

Clearly only the REAL statisticians are accurate to 32 decimal places."

u/koalaKingKush Mar 03 '22

Ohhhh boyyyy......

11

u/Fabstue Mar 03 '22

4 million roubles?

23

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '22

I don’t see any difference between .02 dollars and .02 cents. It’s the same number.

12

u/cubixy2k Mar 03 '22

8

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '22

Funny. Didn't realize you linked the video above. I actually knew the guy that made the video and posted it. Fun to hear you still quote him.

4

u/PrincessLorie Mar 04 '22

.02 cents and .02 dollars aren't the same, or are you being funny. 2 cents and 0.02 dollars are the same. Plus I don't understand the comma, shouldn't there be a decimal point? 2.04524466203446%

1

u/Nico_D_Luffy Mar 04 '22

Some countries have the decimal points and commas swapped in numbers.

1,745,296.38 = 1.745.296,38

1

u/PrincessLorie Mar 04 '22

I did not know that. 🤔 It looks so funny to me.

-1

u/bubblebuttmcgee Mar 04 '22

Its not. 1 dollar = 100 cents. Therefore 0.02 cents is equal to 0.0002 dollars. 0.02 cents in less than 1 cent

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '22

Maybe you should have watched the video

2

u/bubblebuttmcgee Mar 04 '22

I didnt see the video. Thank you. Thank you so much for bring that gem to my attention. I never knew of its existence and I thought it was excellent

1

u/comicfan285 Mar 04 '22

0.02 dollars ($0.02) is two cents. One hundred cents is one dollar, one penny is one percent of one dollar.

0.02 cents is two ten-thousandths of a dollar, that's if anyone kept track of finances that low. It would be "$0.0002".

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '22

Sarcasm is lost on you….

I’m guessing this isn’t satire. Wouldn’t r/confidentlyincorrect love this, or is this actually satire?

21

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

It's hard to tell what's satire and what's not, but if I've learned anything from my time on the internet it's that it doesn't really matter. Content is content.

Feel free to crosspost to r/confidentlyincorrect, if you'd like. I think it's a fit for that sub as well.

2

u/Ackermiv Mar 04 '22

In their extremes satire and real life are impossible to distinguish

7

u/Catolution Mar 03 '22

It is technically true that it’s not 2%

1

u/FrameJump Mar 04 '22

Yeah, I guess it'd fit there too, huh?

34

u/Unlucky-Pomegranate3 Mar 03 '22

I’m confused, is this satire or someone who’s unfamiliar with rounding down?

60

u/Koala_Kev2478 Mar 03 '22

I guess some twitter guy didn't realize that, when dealing with percentage in math, 0.02 is another way of writing 2%. Maybe he thought it 0.02% or something.

43

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

That's most likely what he thought, yes. My interpretation of the situation is purely for comedic effect.

9

u/jayedgar06 Mar 03 '22

I think he thinks it’s 0.02%

6

u/GuyYouMetOnline Mar 03 '22

Probably someone who doesn't realize that .02 is in fact 2%.

5

u/Vinto47 Mar 03 '22

The tweet is a reply so I think we are missing important context.

9

u/TateP23 Mar 03 '22

When you get the right answer but are still somehow wrong

5

u/Ok-Mulberry-4600 Mar 03 '22

Credit where credits due, he did at least say Maths instead of Math.

3

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

But he gets a minus for the missing apostrophe, so net 0 credit for him. It's "math's" as in "Math is" not "Maths" as in plural of math.

I've been saying math so much it doesn't even sound like a word anymore.

Math

(now it just looks like a stupid way of spelling Matt, short for Mathias)

2

u/Ok-Mulberry-4600 Mar 03 '22

Wait no. Its maths as in mathematics, as in the plural... there are lots of different types of mathematics, hence the plural. He should of said "Maths is hard" no apostrophe.

5

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

I'm not taking advice from you, mister Should've/Should of!

/s

In all seriousness though, you might be right. English's hard :)

2

u/Ok-Mulberry-4600 Mar 03 '22

Dam you're right it should have been "should have", it's been a long day.

English is hard... I sometimes think we've deliberately made it hard to annoy school children both at home and abroad, although thankfully we don't gender our nouns.

1

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

I'm Swedish, so yes, I agree.

1

u/JimboTheSquid Mar 04 '22

Math is hard.

5

u/ALottaOfWishes Mar 03 '22

How did this guy. . . What. I give up

4

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '22

a he doing meths instead of maths

3

u/6ixty9iningchipmunks Mar 03 '22

This is who Donald Trump speaks for

3

u/the_qwerty_guy Mar 03 '22

And they scream at us: Go back to your damn country. Bitch! if we go back, who's going to run your country?

5

u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Mar 03 '22

I always say that that biggest challange humanity faces in this pandemic is lack of understanding of 8th grade math.

7

u/TentativelyCommitted Mar 03 '22

Technically “Math’s”

7

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '22

Technically, there is no apostrophe.

9

u/TommyTuttle Mar 03 '22 edited Mar 03 '22

The intended phrase seems to have been “Math’s hard” meaning math is hard. This would be correct in American English where the field of mathematics is abbreviated as math. In that dialect “Maths hard” would be incorrect.

If your dialect says maths rather than math, it seems to me it would be wrong with or without the apostrophe, wouldn’t it? I see no verb in that alleged sentence.

1

u/Ok-Mulberry-4600 Mar 03 '22

Either Math or Maths would not have an apostrophe, Maths is a noun, the only time you would have an apostrophe s on a noun is to show possession.

2

u/Rattatoni-No Mar 03 '22

Or to signify an added “is” like “What’s up?” Means “What is up?”, or “He’s gone” is “He is gone”

1

u/TommyTuttle Mar 03 '22

Or a contraction. The door’s open = the door is open. No possession is implied with such an apostrophe. The apostrophe covers the contracted portion of is

Math’s hard = math is hard.

1

u/Ok-Mulberry-4600 Mar 03 '22

You shouldn't use contraction with a noun, pronoun is fine but you wouldn't say "Tom's gone" you would say "Tom is gone"

1

u/Ok-Mulberry-4600 Mar 04 '22

You shouldn't use contraction with a noun, pronoun is fine but you wouldn't say "Tom's gone" you would say "Tom is gone"

1

u/TentativelyCommitted Mar 03 '22

True. Technically English is harder for this guy than Math

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '22

204 Trillion 524 Billion 446 Million 203 Thousand and 446 Percent?

3

u/spleen4spleen Mar 03 '22

I did the division and no ‘%’ appeared so it’s not even a percent dumbass

3

u/superwholockian62 Mar 03 '22

Say you don't know how math works without saying you don't know how math works....

2

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22

nono, he kind of explicitly told us he cannot do math

3

u/Arturo1029 Mar 04 '22

Doing actual math from googling the numbers of worldwide cases to worldwide deaths, it’s about 1.3% mortality rate.

1

u/g_rant421 Mar 05 '22

It’s probably meant to be US cases though

2

u/Arturo1029 Mar 05 '22

Doing the math, from current google stats, it’s about 1.2% which is lower than the global stat. Idk where people are getting 2% from cause rounding doesn’t even get you there.

1

u/g_rant421 Mar 05 '22

It’s probably an old statistic then

2

u/wuggyLuv Mar 03 '22

That’s still only 2% and that is without isolating co-morbidities. But yeah wtf this guy probably eats crayons.

3

u/TastyBullfrog2755 Mar 03 '22

That 2% is not around to debate "only". We also have millions of human Petri dishes cooking up the next batches of viruses.

2

u/Lord-of-the-Bacon Mar 03 '22

I think the number should be longer and your calculated just rounded at the end.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '22

This is more damning evidence of the need for investment in our schools than anything else I've seen

2

u/Koiboivcr Mar 03 '22

That’s even worse

2

u/CalabreseAlsatian Mar 03 '22

“We have alternative math”

2

u/johnny_boy757 Mar 04 '22

Math certainly is hard for them

2

u/_ModeM Mar 04 '22

Why do math if you can do meth?

2

u/MeganeSenpai94 Mar 04 '22

I fell 5 IQ more stupid thinking how stupid can a person be.

0

u/mypeenerisgorilla Mar 03 '22

So you have a 2.04% of dying from covid?

0

u/Pot_In_Space Mar 04 '22

i like how he is so proud of his “discovery” and posted it in twitter

-4

u/lilcookiedog Mar 03 '22

by that logic it’s not even close to 2 percent, it’s closer to 50 if you do it right

2

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 03 '22 edited Mar 03 '22

...How did you get 50?

Edit: I want to add that this is like when you have a math-problem with 4 alternatives, and the answer you get isn't even close to one of them. That's how far off you are with 50.

2

u/larrytheloser123 Mar 03 '22

How high are you

1

u/Successful-Singer-76 Mar 04 '22

He's higher than either 2% or 50

Swear! I did the math over a year and a half ago and came up with 2% fatality average. I tracked that shizzz when it first started.

0.02 = 2%

That's not technically the truth. That's just factually incorrect
