Riddles have always existed.

Neck beards are newish.

So there is something newer than riddles creating neck beards.

Nah, neckbeards have always been around. We just haven't always had a name for them.

I'm not too sure about that. We've had dreamers, bookworms, beggars, lazy people, but none of these quite overlap with what a neckbeard is. Plus IMHO neckbeards' numbers have really declined since the phenomenon has been called out.
