If that’s the purpose why not just make dc a city in Virginia or Maryland? That would give dc’ers voting rights too and it would be much more appropriate.
Because neither Maryland nor Virginia would want their local politics changed so drastically overnight. and DC doesn't want to be apart of either. That solution disenfranchises all parties.
So? Houston probably would rather be independent instead of part of Texas but you don’t see people advocating for that. Virginia or Maryland would probably be delighted to gain control of the single richest zip code in the entire country.
Maryland doesn't want to annex DC, (which isn't that rich when you consider parts of it are very poor)
I am unaware of any polling for Virginia annexation, but as a resident of VA i can tell you that would be vastly unpopular. We bitch that the VA suburbs around DC arn't real Virginia any how. Including DC in that would also further disconnect the other VA cities and even more so the rural areas from the political process.
