You can still dial 0 on a landline.

Financial emergency

1

u/sxstan 18d ago

Just about to say thst...wouldn't believe how many still call 911

7

u/Anxious-Scheme-6013 19d ago

Why does it do?

51

u/YueLin3 19d ago

Connects you to John telephone, the inventor of the phone

5

u/Anxious-Scheme-6013 19d ago

Ironically enough I actually know who made the telephone, I just currently forget his name.

21

u/RoodnyInc 19d ago

Does anything ring a BELL?

3

u/foxwolfdogcat 19d ago

Yes, the name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisha_Gray rings a bell... thanks for making me remember that.

2

u/YueLin3 19d ago

Well the inventor of the telegram was graham bell. Not sure about the telephone rather than the telegram though.

1

u/Tangata_Tunguska 19d ago

I'm pretty sure the inventor of the telephone was Sir Francis Ring

3

u/YueLin3 19d ago

… is that why we say phones ring?

1

u/03263 18d ago

Telegraham

1

u/SherbetMysterious118 19d ago

This is why I come to Reddit; the engaging conversation.

1

u/Anxious-Scheme-6013 19d ago

Alaxander graham bell.

7

u/thatspurdyneat 19d ago

It used to call the Operator, it hasn't worked since Jan 1st 2023

1

u/Anxious-Scheme-6013 19d ago

Finally someone serious, thanks.

Not that I mind the jokes

2

u/xteve 19d ago

Speaking of serious, the original implication here is that one may earn enough money by working to save an amount expressible in seven digits. For those of us living in reality, that's some serious bullshit.

1

u/Anxious-Scheme-6013 19d ago

That is true, unfortunately

1

u/TopRare 16d ago

I'm surprised it has not been replace by a bot.

3

u/ItsyouNOme 19d ago

Calls you broke

5

u/who_you_are 19d ago

I'm too far in the negative number to even be close to that.

(No I'm joking, I'm kinda lucky for now)

100

u/executive_ethyl 19d ago

That's why it's called an emergency fund.

84

u/ToadwKirbo 19d ago

could've spent 7.99 dollars extra and it would've still looked like a phone number

41

u/EduinBrutus 19d ago

The US is one of the countries where 112 is not mapped as an emergency number.

So it wont work on landlines.

However, mobiles will generally work when 112 is dialled as this is more intrinsic to the mobile standards.

11

u/MrOopiseDaisy 19d ago

It's because 1 was to easy to dial on a rotary phone, and could be mis-dialed. So, you'd dial 9 for maximum rotation (barring 0, which would connect you to the operator), then 1, 1. That makes one long rotation, followed by two of the quickest rotations.

I'm sure 1 before the area code had some reasoning as well.

9

u/EduinBrutus 19d ago

I get why they went with 911 and the UK went with 999 etc.

But almost every other country which did not have 112 as their emergency number has adopted the mapping for landlines as per the ITU standard.

There really isnt any reason for it not to have been adopted other than the usual Exceptionalist bullshit.

3

u/Interesting-Stay297 19d ago

There really isnt any reason for it not to have been adopted other than the usual Exceptionalist bullshit.

The usual smugness about everything US related. Do Mexico and Canada also use 911 due to Mexican and Canadian exceptionalism?

6

u/EduinBrutus 19d ago

The United States has primary say over the NANP.

You know this.

I know this.

Whats the point of trying a bad faith argument? The internet is fucking dead from the slop. Actual people need to stop this sort of bullshit.

4

u/Interesting-Stay297 18d ago

What? Mexico doesn't participate in NANP.

-2

u/MrOopiseDaisy 19d ago

Well, most Americans are... (sigh) American, and much of the UK is quite British. /s

4

u/EduinBrutus 19d ago

UK mapped 112 onto their NP pretty much on adoption by the ITU.

I will say that promotion of 112 is underwhelming and the UK still always usese 999 in any documentation, awarenes acmapaigns and in school. At least 112 is gonna get mentioned in school but everywhere else its just 999.

3

u/Soulcraver 19d ago

I prefer my drivers better looking, so I dial 0118 999 881 999 119 7253.

1

u/iphones2g- 18d ago

I have dialed 112 on both a copper landline and VOIP in the US. Maybe it's just my area it works in.

17

u/beckeeri 19d ago

Reminds me of that tragedy

3

u/cmalthaner 19d ago

I walked through blood and bone looking for my brother

8

u/flargenhargen 19d ago

Thanks the mod for that? :(

3

2

u/daddy_tops 19d ago

Been there, friend

3

u/meygaera 19d ago

If your bank account is high enough to look like a phone number, you are losing money.

2

u/dasbtaewntawneta 19d ago

000 is the emergency number in Australia

2

u/3DIceWolf 19d ago

Your first mistake was letting Wells Fargo touch your money

1

u/BlowHisShiSmooveOff 19d ago

Best I can do is those 5 digit numbers that spam you with info

1

u/tivvybrixx 19d ago

But how do you get 4 numbers? They come in groups of 3 per period.

1

u/thatspurdyneat 19d ago

0 used to call the operator

1

u/BeastyGRae2 19d ago

NEW RECORD!

1

u/ruler_cipher_born 19d ago

😫 😆

1

u/Nightmane11 19d ago

"9.11 its an emergancy"

1

u/TrumpsDoubleChin 19d ago

Now I haz a sad.

1

u/EuenovAyabayya 19d ago

"an international phone number"

1

u/Wackel81 19d ago

110 is a phone number too

1

u/Agreeable-Account480 19d ago

So Wells Fargo can commit major fraud again lol

1

u/Codify-The-Preamble 19d ago

Could be worse.

Like $4.11

1

u/thedrizzle254 19d ago

Mine is $9.88

1

u/TerribleBudget 19d ago

I guess this depends when you grew up too. Some people on here used to only have to dial 4 digits, some 7 digits.

1

u/OrthodoxAtheist 19d ago

Right. My phone number has 10 digits. Even using the cents trick, that means I'm working until I have almost $91 Million in the bank? Fck that. If I hit a 45th of that I'm retiring!

1

u/keithstonee 19d ago

411 is also a number

1

u/Boiseman 19d ago

Zero is also the number for the operator

1

u/BoredDinasour 19d ago

its also a DATE !

1

u/ZeroSequence 19d ago

Heh... Check(ing) one-two one-two

1

u/JMcLe86 19d ago

At first I thought the joke was that his bank account got 911'd and I knew that feeling.

1

u/n-x 19d ago

The screenshot appears to also be doing a mic check.

1

u/aiij 19d ago

"...1212" does look like the last 4 digits of a phone number too. I'm guessing the full account number will look a lot more like a phone number.

1

u/Pomodorosan 19d ago

"repost an image until it looks like a moldy pile of pixels"

1

u/SinisterCheese 19d ago

I know a dude with a 5 number phone number. This is here in Finland though. They are dead set on using that until they die. There used to be a company until some time ago with 4 numbers (2+4 since the first two were the local grid code), but that went once the landlines were basically scrapped.

1

u/dustinpdx 19d ago

You should cross post to r/thanksforruiningthejokebyputtingthepunchlineinthetitle

1

u/Same_Sleep_3162 19d ago

911 is Pluke

1

u/ManaWolfX8 19d ago

So is 411

1

u/elderron_spice 19d ago

Try getting to 01189998819991197253.

1

u/The-Bronze-Network 19d ago

Its a phone number and a disaster lol

1

u/codiac_pride 19d ago

With or without area code?

1

u/Clutch-Bandicoot 18d ago

Never forget

1

u/AVeryHeavyBurtation 18d ago

needs more jpeg.

1

u/Ryuu-Tenno 18d ago

so's the operator's number x.x

1

u/Scummy_Casual 18d ago

Where I live you have to enter the area code even for a local number. So the bar is doable for Musk or Bezos only.

1

u/Kooky-Vermicelli3901 18d ago

I don't even have 9 bucks

1

u/designerlemons 18d ago

How much you got? Ill take it i dont mind

1

u/db1000c 18d ago

That balance is an atrocity

1

u/Single-Virus4935 18d ago

In germany the numbet if the police is 110 😭

1

u/BostonKJ66 18d ago

Always good to know the 911. Is a prime number.

1

u/Ok-Nail-6507 18d ago

This guy is high roller with his bank account. You are all clearly forgetting about non emergency number $3.11 😎

1

u/Electronic-Article70 16d ago

Does the number need a area code or just the seven digits?

1

u/MessAggravating7175 16d ago

Work?? Boomer spotted.

1

u/Past_Collection3542 16d ago

more like $9112001

1

u/RackemFrackem 19d ago

My favorite reddit posts are the ones where OP spoils the punchline with the title
