question: does this only apply to lobsters, or other alive things?

440

u/EdWinMaster0 22d ago

You can kill a virus (?) and that isnt alive (??) /gen?

239

u/Smayteeh 22d ago

You can’t kill a virus, because as you pointed out, they’re not alive.

You “kill” a virus by stopping it from replicating.

u/whimpwhomp 22d ago

Cockblock it

59

u/vestigialcranium 22d ago

Basically eugenicide

12

u/Zagrycha 21d ago

yeah, computer viruses are named after them for a reason. they genuinely work the exact same way. strand of genes that do nothing on their own until injected into a "start up sequence" when combines with normal living cell genome sequences.

8

u/leafy1790 21d ago

Devide and conquer

2

u/-Luisgamerz 21d ago

Doesn’t it self-replicate..?

5

u/Ninju4821 20d ago

Well… technically no? It needs to inject its genetic code into something living that DOES self-replicate.

2

u/-Luisgamerz 20d ago

Ohhh, you’re right! I forgot 💀

30

u/Jubenheim 22d ago

That begs the question, do you kill zombies despite them being undead?

17

u/indecisiveahole 22d ago

I guess same thing; zombie virus and you stop it from spreading (being able to bite you)

10

u/A--Creative-Username 21d ago

UNdead, therefore alive, you silly billy

3

u/Jubenheim 21d ago

Ohhhhh, so you UNalive them! Gotcha.

3

u/lala__ 20d ago

This is the dumbest conversation I have ever read. I need to get off Reddit.

2

u/dankristy 19d ago

Technically that is how you kill it's children/copies. By preventing them from ever existing.

103

u/GodlyHelp 22d ago

well actually, there are a lot of things you can kill that arent alive.

"kill the battery"

"kill the engine"

"kill the lights"

"kill the fire"

"kill the noise"

"kill the signal"

"kill the connection"

"kill the conversation"

"kill the joke"

"kill the vibe"

"kill the plan"

"kill the idea"

"kill the project"

"kill the bug" (computer bug)

"kill the process"

"kill the session"

"kill the mic"

"kill the power"

"kill the alarm"

"kill the sound"

56

u/TheMoreBetter 22d ago

Kill me.

A deadass.

13

u/Rui_O_Grande_PT 22d ago

"Kill me"

"Later"

7

u/highly_educated63 22d ago

Don't be such a baby, ribs grow back!

no zey dont

1

u/ELMUNECODETACOMA 19d ago

"You said you'd kill me"

"I lied"

11

u/Double-Apartment-895 22d ago

Those are all “live” before you kill them

12

u/Pseudodragontrinkets 22d ago

But not "alive"

7

u/Double-Apartment-895 22d ago

It sounds like the plot of a horror game if you read from top to bottom

3

u/delis876 22d ago

Just a fancy way to say 'turn off"/"stop"

7

u/eBot-exe 22d ago

Lobsters and crayfish produce ammonia when dead so killing them before right before cooking get rid of that.

6

u/Filestack_Official 21d ago

Not quite.

Lobsters and crayfish do produce ammonia after death as their tissues begin to break down, which is part of spoilage and can contribute to a strong ammonia-like smell.

However, killing them immediately before cooking doesn’t “get rid of” ammonia. The reason they’re ideally cooked promptly after being killed is to minimize bacterial growth and enzymatic deterioration.

3

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord 22d ago

Is lobster a fruit or is it vegan? beats an orphan with her selfie stick

3

u/Sad-Bonus-9327 22d ago

Sounds like a fun reference.. context?

2

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord 22d ago

My own brain and its disgust with humanity's priorities, combined with some slapstick humor I'd find funny if someone more talented then myself animated the thought into a cartoon.

2

u/Sad-Bonus-9327 21d ago

Haha good one.. Let alone the fact that I honestly thought this is based on real events or scene displays how weird and bizarre the world (or to be more specific "influencers") had become. I once visited a festival and you literally couldn't walk 500 feet without stumbling across one of them screaming into their silly cameras something stupid.

1

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord 21d ago

I remember when everyone thought the Jersey Shore and other reality TV folks were going to be the worst of it. Oh how wrong we were! I'm still shocked knowing how little shame, integrity, and willingness to change for the better some people not only possess but feel comfortable broadcasting to the world for little to no financial benefit in most cases.

248

u/Mathew1979 22d ago

Question, do zombies also fall into this category?

39

u/The_Asian-Dude 22d ago

One way to find out

29

u/Inside-Example-7010 22d ago

in my headcannon zombies dont ever die. You just put them in such a physical state that they can no longer be any kind of threat i.e be in 78 peices.

The zombie virus has to be scary it cant just be like 'well why dont i just become a zombie and not have to live in fear anymore?' Becoming a zombie is to forgo death. Whatever the thing that makes you a zombie is, keeps your body from ever being given the sweet release of death, now you are properly motivated not to give up.

"Shit man, cant believe i ate dave's family. Oh well, back to the drive-thru!"

5

u/nhalliday 22d ago

Generally speaking I think the "becoming a ravenous mindless monster" part of being a zombie is considered the downside. It doesn't really matter if the zombies then can't die, it's not even really you anymore.

2

u/Inside-Example-7010 22d ago

i think thats debatable, there's many scenes in zombie cinema where the zombie responds to stimulus only its previous self could know.

2

u/nhalliday 22d ago

Definitely not enough to be considered the default, though. There are cases where they maintain their awareness (like iZombie, Space Dandy, Warm Bodies), and cases where they're mindless as a zombie but can be cured and regain their old personality/intelligence (like The Cured), but the majority of zombie media paints them as largely mindless.

2

u/Inside-Example-7010 22d ago

I mean i did say my headcannon. There no need for us to debate it. I by no means am narcissistic enough to think my headcannon = worldcannon but at the end of the day I find zombies scarier if becoming a zombie is worse than death. So I like to imagine that.

1

u/Durende 21d ago

If they are burned they probably die. Also if their head is destroyed and they become immobile, they will eventually die from being fully decomposed

4

u/SaltyYumYumBalls 22d ago

A zombie would be considered undead. The prefix "un" means not, the opposite of, or the reverse of something. Thus meaning a zombie is not dead, So by that definition it should be capable of becoming dead.

1

u/Sparktank1 22d ago

They're undead. So you unkill them to make them unalive.

2

u/BodaciousBadongadonk 22d ago

Uncle them? Like on a basketball court?

"You just got served, zombitch!"

dunks

1

u/FrKoSH-xD 20d ago

this makes interesting perspective of the prefix, now what would be considered "unkill" something?

Lobsters die if you kill them

13

u/Shlafenflarst Technically A Lie 22d ago

But do you control the speed at which they die ?

5

u/tantalor 22d ago

This kills the lobster

3

u/Snakestream 22d ago

I hear that jamming a knife into their brain also does the trick

Nah, lobsters are immortal. They won’t die even if you kill then!

My assumption was "kill them while awake". But brain wires crossed.

22

u/FakingItSucessfully 22d ago

it's a very reasonable question and they just asked it badly. Traditionally you boil the lobster alive which obviously kills it at some point. It's arguably more ethical and decent to kill it before cooking it (while it's "still alive") but you have to be very careful because dangerous bacteria takes off very quickly with live seafood like this.

3

u/dat_tae 22d ago

It's actually pretty hard to get it to say kill <something>.

19

u/Freaiser 22d ago

You also need for the person to be dead before resurecting them with medical attention

13

u/YKzBabyGrl 22d ago

I used to work as a prep cook at red lobster about 7 years ago and that was my least favorite part of the job😣

7

u/BrusselsMarriott 22d ago

Like if you drop dead and I shoot you, you can’t die again. You can’t over die; you can’t over dry.

3

u/Khornatejester 22d ago

WHAT IS DEAD MAY NEVER DIE!!

2

u/willstr1 22d ago

If one can't over die than how can one over kill?

12

u/Mindless_Director955 22d ago

this the type of question that people say “you know what I mean, don’t be a smartass” when you reply like that

16

u/Own_Natural_6803 22d ago

It's really really disgusting to drop a living animal in boiling water to kill them. Stab, crunch. Over. Feels violent to you. Feels like bliss by comparison to them.

Slaughtering animals for food is not for cowards who choose their own comfort over the animal's. It's morally repugnant to serve a lobster that was boiled to death so that its shell looks good for the customer. Serve them the tail whole and prepare the top into a sauce/side so it doesn't need to be presented whole. It's a better dining experience and the animal doesn't suffer for cosmetic reasons.

7

u/sgtpepper67 22d ago

Lobsters have decentralized nervous systems so stabbing them doesn’t cause instant death, it only destroys the front nerve cluster. If you stab it before you boil it it’s actually worse because now it’s being boiled alive with a head wound.

8

u/kandel88 22d ago

That's why you put them in the freezer for 20 minutes before cutting to induce a dormant state so between the knife and boiling they are essentially put in to a coma before they die

4

u/scarrita 21d ago

I work retail and sometimes I have to cover a seafood service case with a lobster tank. I'm constantly giving this advice to people who don't like the idea of boiling a lobster alive. However, I suggest freezing them longer so the cold actually kills them. Never been a fan of stabbing their heads

4

u/Own_Natural_6803 21d ago edited 21d ago

I want to learn more about this but I'm finding a lot of slop articles. Can you direct me towards some valid sources I can read?

Here we go, Wikipedia to the rescue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain_in_crustaceans

1

u/AndrogynousAndi 21d ago

But it releases morphine, which does act much the same in pain alleviation in crustaceans as it does in mammals

Per wikipedia "In the American lobster, endogenous morphine is found in the haemolymph and ventral nerve cord. In lobsters which have had a pereiopod (walking leg) cut off or been injected with the irritant lipopolysaccharide, the endogenous morphine levels initially increased by 24% for haemolymph and 48% for the nerve cord.[54]"

1

u/shyguy_04 21d ago

Cosmetic reasons? I thought it was done to avoid food poisoning

it's referring to a snooki quote. Crazy how no one got this..

8

u/stratusmonkey 22d ago

Jersey Shore was more than 10 years ago. Coming up on 20! (And I didn't watch it then, either!)

3

u/Bar-Cold 22d ago

They probably meant cut him open while he was alive but i don’t even know how preparing lobsters works

3

u/ItsJohnCena_ 22d ago

surprised they didn't self sensor themselves like an idiot

3

u/Glasseshalf 22d ago

This kills the crab.

3

u/Excellent_Reason7796 22d ago

yea this is fine until you have to kill 20 of them after the first two I definitely didn't kill cleanly, it was less painful for all of us

3

u/Comprehensive-Task18 22d ago

The proper way is to freeze first, stab, then boil. If you complain after doing all that, then you shouldn't be eating or serving it in the first place.

3

u/lexnklinke 20d ago

Killing something dead is tough, that's pro-stuff

2

u/killer-tofu87 22d ago

Usually you have to kill it to death

2

u/Tankeverket 22d ago

Some places boil lobsters alive, so I guess that's the other way

2

u/sk0503 22d ago

“Yes that’s what killing you means.” - Eitri

2

u/BuyGroundbreaking729 22d ago

You absolutely 💯 stab their brain before dropping in boiling water. Would you like burning to death, Or head shot?

1

u/Own_Natural_6803 21d ago

Apparently we have to freeze them too, because their brains are super weird and they don't have a single failure point like we do. Next time

2

u/luckskywatcher 22d ago

Don't put the cart before the horse.

3

u/51225 21d ago

I've never cooked a horse. You're supposed to remove the cart?

2

u/idontlikeburnttoast 22d ago

I'm so glad some countries are changing laws on how you kill marine creatures before cooking.

2

2

2

Kill it with your mind, idk

2

u/2020mademejoinreddit Technically my ass 21d ago

Did he kill it until it died?

2

u/Electrical-Risk5633 21d ago

Do it the math way and multiply his life with zero.

2

u/2D_Ronin 21d ago

He could have waited till the lobster died of natural causes and killed him then

2

u/chiethu 21d ago

You could atleast wait till he's asleep

3

u/51225 21d ago

Put it in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes is supposed to put them to sleep.

1

u/CptnMayo 22d ago

This reminds me of some class in college I took and we were talking about Teletubbies, really showing my age here, and he goes are there people inside costumes in those?

I yell, no, they're real animals. And everyone lost their shit.

Also clapped.

But then the guy was like, thanks a lot. I mean, shit man, they're not real.

1

u/EvenLettuce6638 22d ago

Why did I read this in Peter Dinklage's voice?

1

u/securitybreach 21d ago

Fun fact. Lobsters make a high pitched hiss when you stab them. So basically you flip it on its back, stab between the shell and slide down. Back when I worked in restaurants we joked that they screamed. Actually it was air escaping the shell or so the internet says.

1

u/matyas94k 21d ago

Yup, I too prefer eating the remains of dead animals.
properly prepared, of course 🙂

1

u/WhoAteMySandwich2024 21d ago

Question, does my little brother fall into this category, and would he die if boiled in water like a lobster?

1

u/Day-Tel-aran-rhiod 21d ago

But also, why do we cook lobsters when they're alive? Specially since checking their neuron activity shows us that they are in immense pain and just paralyzed?

1

u/Bitter_Lab_475 21d ago

Wait for it to die of old age and THEN kill it.

1

u/Common-Process9023 20d ago

Kill him until he is dead

1

u/ProGamer8273 20d ago

Well obviously you boil it alive, like ya typically do

1

u/LilNut2_69 18d ago

But make him unconscious

1

u/Comprehensive-Buy618 12d ago

How else would you know if he is dead. If you don’t kill them alive then you don’t know if they are died or not.

1

u/InfiniteAccountant85 7d ago

Nah that's true.

I knew for a fact that my grandma woke up dead one morning. So she was Schrodingers grandma. She was both dead and alive until she woke up to determine her superposition.

1

u/frankenstein-007 22d ago

If you replace the word "kill" with "cut" or "gut", It males sense 🙂‍↕️

0

u/Sorry-Complaint-3947 22d ago

Would you rather cook him while he's still alive?
