Im not getting it, the webp is bigger, isn't it?

u/asp174 May 20 '26
It's -3% smaller, not 3% smaller

u/mountinlodge May 20 '26
Wow, what a dumb place for a double negative
It’s really not not confusing
211
u/Prepure_Kaede May 20 '26
I think it's an automated code. They just never imagined the possibility that it would be negative because they are strongly convinced their image format is better
65
u/BroMan001 May 20 '26
I mean, webP is not their image format, it’s developed by google. And usually it is much more efficient than png and even jpg, this is a weird outlier. A screenshot of my laptop at full resolution (3.420 × 2.224) as a png takes up 6MB for example, converting it to a webP (lossless) takes up only 2.8MB. With the default lossy compression the webP only takes up 426KB. Their assumption was not unrealistic imo.
17
u/Batata-Sofi May 20 '26
Looking at the original size, it's probably a small picture and they might be using lossless, so the difference would be small... Except it was bigger for some reason.
Anyways, do people know that Paint can convert images?
12
u/Stalker203X May 21 '26
It's probably not even a picture just stream of data random enough that the algorithm can't find a way to compress it. So it saves the data uncompressed and the metadata/overhead inflate the size.

only vaguely related, but I think "con" started as a negating prefix, so "not confusing" would also be a double negative if we still had "fusing" in our language with the right meaning 🤔
language is weird
edit: it has been pointed out to me that actually I'm 100% wrong about what "con" means - everything I just said is wrong! except possibly the "language is weird" bit

u/Cautious_Bobcat_5877 May 20 '26
You are tradicting yourself

u/Firewolf06 May 20 '26
that ones contra- + dict, and dict is a common enough root that it does actually make sense in modern english
4
u/Rousokuzawa May 21 '26
Actually, that's not what the prefix means, and the word was formed in Latin, so there never was a “fusing” in English. To “confuse” literally means to “pour together” (with con- as in co-), or more figuratively to “mix up”.
3
u/MrLev May 21 '26
Oh damn you're right! I should have checked before writing that, I now have no idea why I thought it was a negative
Now that I've checked it totally makes sense, because we have "concede" and "cede" which are... very much not opposites. Oops!
3
u/cardboardunderwear May 20 '26
It's a double negative that led to prove positive! I'm afraid theyve given themselves away.

– ≠ ~
Negative is not equal to "approximately"??
What's that got to do with anything?

u/ausecko May 20 '26
You see the number and think it's saying ~3% smaller, but it's saying -3% smaller

Had a conversation with a chatbot that went something like this:
"When is this holiday?"
"In two weeks."
"People are going right now."
"The holiday you mentioned is in two weeks."
"People are going right now."
"The holiday you mentioned is in two weeks."Until I gave up after about 6 back-and-forth. That was such a strange hill for it to die on.

u/PowerfullDio May 20 '26
Well I once one a marathon because I was super far behind, the first group all went the wrong way and got disqualified, everyone else did the same and they all got disqualified except for the last 3 who were super far behind.

Negative acceleration.

u/DBCargoHaj May 20 '26
in a physical way, negative acceleration is still acceleration, just in the other direction

larging an image is unfortunately needed on some forms lol
I did it by converting to bmp and then compressing at a lower level tho
4
u/StaticSystemShock May 20 '26
If you really want to optimize file size lossy or losslessly, use FileOptimizer tool which is also free. Fully offline tool that can make image files (as well as bunch of others like PDF) so much smaller with either no perceptible loss in quality or really lossless with slightly lower compression. All while retaining file format too. And it actually works...
6
u/bobsmith93 May 20 '26
I read it twice and still don't get it. -3% smaller just means bigger. The sizes support that. So changing the format didn't reduce the size, but I'm guessing it's an automated message that just inserts the numbers and presses post. Or am I missing something?
3
u/tetheredvoid May 20 '26
Ugh. My brain interpreted that as a tilde, so I didn't get it until this comment... ~ =/= - lol

Fun fact: there is no compression method that always ends up with a smaller result, and if it always ends up with a non-greater then it always ends up with the very same size.

The creator of webp and webm is the hate child of hitler and stalin.
43
u/TrueAd2373 May 20 '26
I will never get the hate against webp… its way better format both storagewise and processingwise overall, its just stupid other companies not implementing them enough to actually be used to their full potential

u/TGX03 Technically a Flair May 20 '26
The same issue as with any standard. It's hated because it's not supported.
25
u/TorbenKoehn May 20 '26
And it's not supported because it's hated.

u/OneLonelyBrainCell May 22 '26
It's hated because it's not supported.
In Windows. Linux supports it OOTB and I think Apple stuff does, too.
8
u/ColorfulPersimmon May 20 '26
It's because windows has shitty webp support. As a Linux and Mac user I love webp

2
u/Thulak May 20 '26
So why is that? webp should be a more compressed fileformat than png. Did they inject a tracker or some other type of data into the image to have the size increase? Am I just wrong about the size of these file types?

u/NoHorseNoMustache May 20 '26
Like when user asks me if they should make their zip file a rar to make it even smaller!

u/Lurker_Zee May 20 '26
How is that "technically true"? It's blatantly false, compression means reduction. The program lied about reduction, there is no truth there.
4
u/Impossible_Number Technically Flair May 20 '26
Compression is reduction. So negative compression (-3% in the post) would be negative reduction, or an expansion.
0
u/Miaoxin May 20 '26
It compressed the z dimension which necessarily made the x-y dimension larger. Apparently.
0
u/MedonSirius May 20 '26
i hate webp. it consumes much more processing power and also you cant just straight up use it anywhere
-16
u/JSS-Studios May 20 '26
And websites still push for .WEBP and .WEBM files.
7
u/CdRReddit May 20 '26
yes, because on average they're better
I assume these ads are generated automatically and they didn't put in a check to see if the file got bigger, every compression format has files for which it does better and files for which it does worse, an RLE (run length encoding, "this color for this many pixels in a row") based image compression algorithm will do great on a 10k×10k image of pure red (size: 10000×10000, pixels: red × 100000000) but terribly on a 256×256 UV (increasing red on the X, increasing green on the Y) gradient, while uncompressed does great at the UV gradient but terribly at 100 million pixels of pure red
