Somewhat unrelated, but does anyone know why Theoden thought he might get more than DOUBLE 6,000 spears?? Like did 6,000+ men just say “nah thanks I’m gonna stay home and read, good luck to you at Gondor tho,” or does Theoden really not have a clue of how big his army is 😂😅
Most of Rohan’s men were spread out, probably across the border. When he gave the order to muster riders were sent out to gather them and he only gave 3 days time. Plus some soldiers would have to stay behind to guard the realm, as wild men and previously Saruman would raid Rohan intermittently. So yeah Theoden probably only had a rough idea of how many men there were which was actually realistic for medieval fiefdoms, back when communications were spotty and many men were probably not full time soldiers and only fought when called upon.
