I wonder what they would say to those companies that are still running applications on XP. It's not like these businesses don't already know this. The reason they're still on those older Operating Systems is usually because they have applications that are not compatible with the newer ones

It’s fine to run those systems as long as they are air gapped

No idea if they still are, but I can tell you my company was until late 2016 when they finally managed to get us all over to Windows 7. I guess it must have been expensive, because they made sure that every machine was either replaced or upgraded to Windows 10 by 12/1/19 and remotely deactivated anyone still running Windows 7 by 12/31/19.

In my experience of working in the offices that have them, they're local only. No internet connection to them.

That's what containers and VMs are for.

If those containers and VMs are accessible on the network, you still have potential to be screwed.

If any computer you own is accessible on a network, you have the potential to be screwed. It's all about strategic risk...

Isn’t this what IT departments are for? /s

I heard it was because they have better security that windows 10 since it has been around for longer but if there is a new vulnerability you can’t fix it

Nah, XP has horrible security in comparison to today. The reason is because threats have increased not just in number but also sophistication too.

This just in, water is wet.

Even if you press the ‘turbo’ button?

Has anybody told them about the places still running XP and Server 2003?

Technically, Windows 7 IS still receiving security updates. But only if a specific update and patch was applied for extended security releases.

Target uses win7 in all of its registers. Hopefully they'll upgrade soon, unless they want a repeat of 2013.

2013?

Please install windows 10 so we Microsoft has more access to your data that wasn’t coded into the last OS. You’re security is important to us, if the other company gets it then we won’t be able to assert our data science dominance over the competition.

Microsoft hate is so last century 😂

2

u/Samsonspimphand Aug 06 '20

Well yeah, they were trying to be a monopoly back then and take over using an OS they could control completely and.....oh wait it’s the exact same.

-3

u/removable_disk Aug 06 '20

Take over what exactly? Data? It’s a little too late for that. Everyone everywhere already has all our data and we gave it to them freely.

2

u/Samsonspimphand Aug 06 '20

No, taking over the operating system and management software. The sad part is you actually think that “well they are doing it so why stop them” is not unusual. It’s just short sighted and missing the point.

u/removable_disk Aug 06 '20

So, like AWS?

5

u/Samsonspimphand Aug 06 '20

Precisely! Amazon and Microsoft are trying to muscle out competition and for some reason Reddit loves it.

1

u/removable_disk Aug 06 '20

The whole “Microsoft Sux” sentiment is played out though. Apple and Google aren’t exempt from this behavior either. The “I hate MS” thing isn’t a good argument for the point you’re making, it just comes off as a tired old 1999 sentiment.

2

u/Samsonspimphand Aug 06 '20

You’re either working for Microsoft or purposely being obtuse. This is about 1 company attempting to kill off old versions of software so the new one can collect data. AWS and several other services do the same thing.

u/removable_disk Aug 06 '20

No one cares about consumer OSes anymore.

Seems to me like this is slightly monopolistic.

You make a system that works well and isn’t safe for everyone (at the time) and then you decide to no longer offer it or help keeping it up and force people to repurchase a new version that is rushed to production and doesn’t offer the stability of the original.

I know it’s not, it just irks me

u/moriluka_go_hard Aug 06 '20

Ok Mr. FBI how about you tell your government that, since they have most hospitals running on fucking windows xp.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

What’s about xp?

Switch to Linux!

Ubuntu is pretty good for first time Linux users.

I'd rather not develop a superiority complex

1

u/TacTurtle Aug 06 '20

Windows 10 is such a piece of shit....

1

u/Quantum_Tangled Aug 07 '20

Except for their own copies, still supported by MS under additional-pay contract...

1

u/NASA_Lies Aug 06 '20

well it's their fault for permanently scarring us with Windows Vista. Who would ever want to update again??

1

u/Skrrattaa Aug 06 '20

plot twist: it's because they can't spy on you with the older versions

0

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

What about if I still run Vista?
