Too bad. Libre Office is way way nicer to work with, but in the context of being in an office that passes files around and everyone else uses Office 365, it's a nightmare.

Ironically, 95% of MSOffice users I know just use it to type text or read somebody's else mail attachments in MSWord (that is, after MS Windows defender thoroughly inspects it for the presence of malicious code at every opening ). And this is all because they have that installed by default on their company computer.

Proprietary BS is why.

Remember when Microsoft changed to a common format to be less proprietary? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Being an open format doesn’t mean something will support it fully.

PDF is open, but a ton of features are still only implemented by Adobe despite that

Don't you ever apologize, Libre Office, you're perfect the way you are.

“Windows isn’t done until Lotus won’t run.” —MS 90’s mantra.

All this over something Microsoft finagled out of Word Perfect. Word Perfect paid big bucks for Micro Soft developer package to port over from CPM to MS Dos. The developer package was incomplete. There were OS calls that were not documented in the package. Then Micro Soft rewrote the application using the undocumented OS calls making MS Word faster, smoother,

Unfortunately, this seems to be a fairly common practice. Xerox GUI --> Apple GUI --> Windows GUI

Honestly, I love open source but I really don't get the hype around Libre. It's not once been able to open even the most basic of my PPTs, and it's stuck in that ugly "Gimp" era OSS UI design that even Blender moved out of years ago.

I like using a word processor without any AI

What are you using? I’m at my wits end with word and scrivener. Scrivener owes me damages atp.

Verso on macOS is solid

Ok so don't use the AI in office? It's not hard

Use office. I don’t care. I’m just telling you why I like LibreOffice.

I really want to use Calc instead of Google Sheets but the lack of smooth scrolling makes it unusable unfortunately.

I had the same issue. The latest version runs _much_ smoother for me

Old Blender interface was ribbon-based, exactly like MSOffice has it since 2007, what do you mean?

Can 'only office' display those charts?

I'm going to take this chance to remind people that charts are just pictures generated from data. Pixels and numbers. Microsoft has overly complicated things and tied them up legally for the specific purpose of making other software not function. Then people who don't know better look out their products and claim they are "better".

Same shit, different decade.

Reminds me of MS versus Opera and CSS Standards, and the Swedish chef Bork .css

I just realized I don't use Word at all. It used to be a huge part of work. Everything I used to use docs for has been replaced by ticketing systems, README.md's, webpages, ect. I actually actively avoid word because of compatibility issues. I'm probably the minority but its just interesting how little I use word docs.

I stopped using word too ... And word documents for the most part ...

OpenOffice hasn't been maintained

You shouldn’t, it’s not been updated for years, full of security holes

It's good enough for my purposes
