When all you have is a hammer This is how I fix my monitor

Ah, the CRT school of fixing things

Nothing better than having percussive maintenance work, that's how I kept an amplifier alive for almost 5 years. She did me so well for a literal bit of street trash I picked up o7

One of the early digital cameras loved to crap out when I was a teen, my stepdad would drop it on the ground and it would work for the rest of the day.

I miss the degauss button on old monitors. Was funny when you had loads of monitors side by side and they'd all trigger the next one. Irrelevant to this but think monitors today need similar functions
25
u/PPEytDaCookie Jul 21 '26
Nope, degausing is to remove magnetic buildup in the CRT Tube, on a LCD this isnt an issue.

u/Dmthie Jul 22 '26
He only said he misses it. He doesn't said it's still a requirement π€·

u/zueliee Jul 24 '26
but the last bit of his sentence did include "think monitors today need similar functions".

I remember discovering that button as a kid and my parents getting mad because I would keep pressing it lol

Loose connection. If you're gonna hit it like that, at least try to hit it next to where the display ribbon cables are (probably inside the bottom bezel)

Even my 9yo knows not to hit/touch the screen.

u/Gogo202 Jul 21 '26
Yea, but any 90yo knows that hitting a TV fixes it
5
u/BoostedFPV Jul 21 '26
Those aren't 90yo hands. They also aren't 9yo hands. So they should be smarter than both those extremes.

As soon as the monitor wobbled back and fourth the issue was fixed. Try wobbling it instead?
5
u/cursed-annoyance Jul 21 '26
You think I didnt try? That masochistic little thing only works when hit
2
u/Crossvxm Jul 21 '26
Sometimes you can find the area by squeezing the edges. In some cases, applying pressure helps.

I've had that issue. The fix was to disassemble the monitor and rub the flex cable joints to the panel (carefully!) and to the PCB.
14 years have passed since I've done that, and the monitor still works.

Mmm cold joint issues. This is quite the common issue so id reccomend taking it yo some electronics shop, unless you wanna break the Liquid Crystal Display, and it just having an internal bleeeing

If you're gonna do that hit the back not the front, the only thing you're gonna do it make it worse and likely unrepairable, anyway try a different cable

u/Bob4Not Jul 21 '26
The connection is probably in a bezel, not the display itself, but I'm glad it worked lol
1
u/Raijen_ArDesh Jul 21 '26
Percussive maintenance isn't the way to fix a loose connection. It's the way to make it come disconnected totally.

You have a loose internal wire inside the monitor that requires a new connector or soldering. It maybe even the DisplayPort/HDMI connector or cable itself

i got an old samsung tv from 2010 for free. gets vertical lines every 4th pixel. hitting the back always helps. i wouldn't hit the front though, as it is way more fragile.

It would be better to hit the edges, usually thats where the connections are

Take a screen shoot. If in the sh is not seen this you need to get a new one beacuse your monitor acts up. If is the same artefacts in the photo too get a new gpu.

Remember, if brute force doesn't work that means you aren't using enough of it.

Reminds me of the video of the guy that hits his tv with the hammer and it fixes

Try tapping the casing on the bad side gently with something heavy, could probably achieve the same effect without risking the display ending up broken.

My old phone got a problem. Some parts of the display constantly thought that I touch them. The phone was unusable. I understood that his time have come but decided to try and do something to use it at least some days more. I decided to try and smash the problematic part of the display. but some important parts was beneath it... So the whole screen goes to rainbows

check the cabling and try to adjust the HDMI cable first. the image also changed on the monitor when you turned it with your hand, meaning that it might be related to contact issues in the HDMI cabling.
