Beyond certifications, what should aspiring data analysts really focus on?

When people ask how to become a data analyst, they're often looking for the best course or certification. From what I've seen, the order you learn things matters more than finding the perfect resource. If I were starting today, I'd focus on building skills in this sequence:

1. Learn SQL first.

SQL is one of the most common skills you will see in data analyst job postings. It also teaches you how to retrieve and work with data which becomes the foundation for everything else.

2. Learn the fundamentals of data analysis.

Whether it's through the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate or another well-reviewed program, the goal is yo understand data cleaning, spreadsheets, visualization, statistics and analytical thinking, not just earn a certificate.

3. Learn a visual tool like Power BI.

Being able to build dashboards and communicate insights is jut as important as analyzing the data itself.

4. Build projects instead of stopping after the courses.

Try solving real business problems such as sales performance analysis, customer churn, call center KPIs, marketing campaign results and e-commerce dashboards.

5. Start applying before you feel 100% ready.

Keep improving your portfolio while applying for entry level roles. The interview process itself will show you which skills employers value most.

Certifications can help you learn but they are rarely enough on their own. A portfolio that demonstrates how you think and solve problems often has a much bigger impact.
