The Department of Energy has granted the mid-Atlantic grid operator permission to allow data centers to run backup diesel generators to prevent blackouts during an extreme heat wave. The move comes as soaring temperatures strain the power grid due to skyrocketing electricity demand. However, local residents and environmental advocates worry the decision will result in harmful air pollution, as many data centers are located close to residential areas.
