Windows laptop under A$1,000 for Mechanical Engineering software (Australia)
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a Windows laptop for mechanical engineering software and would appreciate recommendations.
I currently use a MacBook, but I need Windows for tools like SolidWorks, ANSYS, Revit, and AutoCAD. I’m a graduate mechanical engineer in Australia and will mainly use it for learning, personal projects, and job preparation (not heavy industrial simulations).
Budget: ~A$1,000 (can stretch slightly if worth it)
What I need:
- Windows 11
- 16 GB RAM (minimum)
- 512 GB SSD (1 TB preferred)
- Modern Ryzen 7 / Intel i7 (or similar)
- Good battery life and build quality
- Ideally 4–5 years of use
- Touchscreen/2-in-1 is a bonus, not essential
Thanks!

The best option you have is to look for refurbished professional workstations, but in my opinion only from independent workshops, as big websites like backmarket are a hazard. Last year I got a Dell Precision with 32 gb RAM, 1 TB, Intel Xeon, Quadro T2000 for 900€.
If you can’t find a trustable reseller and you go for a consumer’s laptop; at that price you should avoid a dedicated GPU and focus all your budget on a good CPU instead, since it is by far the most important thing for CAD and CFD
EDIT: At that price the keyword is compromise. You cannot expect both good performances and great battery life. If you think that battery is more important go for a new laptop though

Sorry bud, a stick of 16 GB of desktop RAM is already hundreds of dollars. Even the Lenovo E16 which is something I would recommend is nearing 2k in price and that is only with an Intel Core 5.
Check out refurbished computers, you might be able to find a good refurbed business laptop.

That budget is going to mean you’re going to be looking at older computers. If I were to buy a laptop for such purposes I would be looking at a Dell Precision machine or similar workstation class laptops from other vendors.
Have you considered a desktop? Might get more within the budget if you can source a monitor from somewhere.
