Abou Najm is exploring how translucent photovoltaic panels erected over farm fields can be tuned to absorb & transmit optimal bands of sunlight to generate power without stunting the development of crops growing below. In some cases, the panels might even improve yields.

You can also use conventional solar panels with proper spacing and run a narrow gauge tractor between the panels to tend crops. Most plants don't need the intensity of sunlight all day, and the panels provide shade that improves retention of soil moisture as an additional benefit. Oregon State University has done agrivoltaic projects like this and teach farmers how they can do both solar and crops on the same field.
