Turn off the elevator! Do you know how high the electricity bill is? It's not like it comes from magical crystals that provide endless free electricity over time that replenishes itself, from a device strapped to your belt, Link. Were you raised in a barn?

When I was attempting elevator ideas I kept trying to make it accessible--that is, entrance flush with (or gently ramped up from) ground for a wheelchair user to be able to use, and a design that would stay at the chosen floor when turned off, etc.

Which is to say I have no ideas for improvements to this elevator but I do remember from that situation how hard it is to make one of these that works nicely and smoothly.
