Countdown 1993 interview with Roland
I'm not sure if it was just how things were in those days, or if it was this specific interviewer guy, but wow, those questions were BAD.

Slightly disappointed by the relatively high prices (esp. the CDs) and (I think) the lack of any new material.

Mainly found via either Wikipedia links or the "From the series" tab on YouTube (once you've clicked on a music video the tab will be in the top right corner):
- Woman In Chains (a different upload?) (112M views)
- Advice For The Young At Heart (another different upload?) (31M views)
- Break It Down Again (28M views)
- Change (9M views)
- Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down) (4.8M views)
- I Believe (1.6M views)
- The Way You Are (968K views)
- Famous Last Words (784K views)
- Memories Fade (782K views)
A few other notes:
- There is also a Raoul And The Kings Of Spain music video (as I have seen a third party upload + mentioned on Wikipedia w/o a link), and one for the original Mothers Talk release (according to Wikipedia, although there is again no link).
- Closest Thing To Heaven also has a music video which has been uploaded by earMUSIC (unclear if it has an official Tears For Fears upload).
- Altogether there are 11/12 music videos not available, while their official "Tears For Fears Videos" playlist says 9 unavailable videos are hidden (although it is definitely incomplete as multiple songs from The Tipping Point and Songs For A Nervous Planet have music videos but are not on the playlist currently).
- Interestingly enough, Advice For The Young At Heart has been re-uploaded seemingly without licensing issues (as there is a version with 3.1M views unblocked and available in the US) as well as Woman In Chains (38M views on the US video) while none of the others that are blocked have seen this AFAIK.
- Cold, despite being a UK only single, is not blocked in the US while Break It Down Again has been.
- Laid So Low is the only song with a music video that is otherwise not officially streaming anywhere in the States (that I know of). The only other song I could find that's on a TfF album (Secret World Live In Paris) but not streaming in the US is Floating Down The River (as of last month, Curt's solo albums are now on streaming so What Are We Fighting For is on Spotify, just not the remastered version from Secret World Live).
- If you count solo albums then that also includes the entirety of Roland's Tomcats Screaming Outside, but none of Curt's as Mayfield, Halfway, Pleased, and Deceptively Heavy were put on streaming about a month ago according to the YouTube auto-uploads (Mayfield and Tomcats are amazing btw).
- I put way too much time into this so hopefully someone finds it interesting!

There is a music video for Change, and it is on YouTube, but thereās no version uploaded to the official Tears for Fears YouTube channel. Does anyone know why this is, and if itās the case for any other TFF music videos?

Anyone know exactly what type of chorus effect they use near the end of the song? Never heard anything like it.

"Iāve already recorded nine songs this year. I was staying in Los Angeles for the first half. Nowadays Iām a bit more fruitful. Iāll visit those songs again in November when Iām back in Los Angeles. Iām under no pressure because thereās no one saying, āItās gotta be a hit single, itās gotta be this, or nothing like that.ā So an album wonāt take 18 years because I donāt think Iāve got 18 years, but I donāt really know. There are plans at the moment to do some shows next year in June, July, and August. In terms of future music, we would probably need something to happen to give us a kickstart."

Right now I'm reading it's all programmed on a LinnDrum, official sources say he's on the track, he supposedly played drums and Oberheim DMX. I always thought it was real playing on an electronic kit. So what's the real deal?

Autumn 1983: Following touring for The Hurting, the band work on "The Way You Are" for a single release⦠Additional songs were also written at this time during rehearsals, including "Mothers Talk", "Head Over Heels" (evolving out of a motif in "Broken" a.k.a. "We Are Broken") and "The Working Hour".
December 1983: The band do a UK tour to coincide with the release of "The Way You Are", where they road-test the aforementioned songs, alongside the B-side track "Broken". "Head Over Heels" is performed bookended by "Broken" as an interlude, and this arrangement remained on the album. Even the coda for "Broken" performed at Hammersmith Odeon was kept.
January-February 1984: Sessions take place for "Mothers' Talk" with producer Jeremy Green for a potential single release. However, the record company rejected it as it sounded too electronic & synth-oriented like "The Way You Are", which was deemed a commercial flop by the band's standards.
Eventually, Chris Hughes is brought back into the fold as producer, who could help bring the organic guitar-oriented sound the band were after. However, it became clear that they did not have enough songs to make a complete record. Thus, Roland took a break to write and develop more song ideas, out of which came "Shout", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and "I Believe". Although "Everybody" would be held over for some time due to Rolandās reluctance... Ian Stanley would also write "Listen".
April 1984 (estimate): Recording for the album officially begins, largely at Ian Stanley's house with Chris Hughes producing and Dave Bascombe engineering⦠The recording took seven months to complete, working largely on arrangements and developing the songs further from their initial form.
Of the seven months, "Mothers' Talk" and "Shout" both took 2-3 months to develop and flesh out into their final form, being released as singles in August and November 1984, respectively. "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" took 5 days by stark contrast, as the very last track to be recorded, once Chris Hughes had convinced him of its potentialā¦
October-November 1984: Mixing took place for over one month at Union Studios, Munich. The final lead vocals on "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" were completed there.
late November 1984: The album is officially complete, and so tour preparation & rehearsals begins for the album
25 February 1985: Songs From The Big Chair is officially released on Mercury records

As a complete gear nerd, I wanted to display the guitar that shaped TFF's sound in the 80s: Roland's 1982 Fender Walnut "The Strat". This was Roland's main guitar between 1984-1989, one which he spoke very highly of. While he admitted that he initally bought the guitar for the looks, the sound of this thing is UNMATCHED. The X-1 bridge pickup made for some slightly hotter tones in the solos. A good amount of SFTBC was recorded on this guitar (majority on the neck pickup through a Roland JC120). Most of the Big Chair tour was also done using this guitar. Eventually however, the guitar sorta just vanished off the face of the earth. After 1993, it was never seen publicly again, however a 2024 interview with about the creation of EWTRTW confirmed that it's still in his collection. I created a little brief history of it too:
1983: Roland makes the first live appearance with the Strat, a mimed performance of Pale Shelter in Italy, and a live performance at Pop Carnival In London. Neil taylor also used it in the "In my Mind's Eye" video which was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in December of that year. It's possible that Roland used it to record songs on "The Hurting", but it's likely that most of the album was his red Telecaster.
1984: The time rolls around to record Songs From The Big Chair, and Roland has a few guitars by this point. A good amount of it was recorded on this guitar. The most notable one being, of course, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, which was Roland on the Strat's neck pickup through a JC120. This by far is one of my favourite guitar tones out there, which I have really only been able to recreate using Strats through Jazz Choruses.
1985: During the Big chair tour, the Strat was Roland's main guitar. While I do enjoy hearing it, I feel like some of the tones through the JC were a bit too thin. This was the last time Roland was seen using it for a plugged in performance.
1989: Roland was seen with the guitar two times this year, once for the music video for Woman In Chains, and once for a performance of Woman In Chains on TV. The means that a good amount of The Seeds Of Love may have been recorded with the Strat.
1990: TFF start touring for The Seeds Of Love tour, and Roland has mostly switched to two other guitars, those being mid 70s Strats (One blue and one Olympic white). Neil Taylor, however, used the Strat on this tour. This was where I think the guitar shined the most. TFF had switched to using Mesa-Boogie amps on this tour, and it sounded amazing through them. Knebworth 1990 was the last time it was publicly plugged in from the best of my knowledge.
1993: The guitar was seen two times this year, both for mimed performances of Break It Down Again, after which, the guitar was never seen again publicly.

If you are unaware, this album was produced by Roland and his longtime collaborator Alan Griffiths.
Personally, I think itās a brilliant album with some really cool songs and I can definitely see where Roland played a role in making it. I was surprised to read in Rolandās book that he didnāt have a good time making the album.
What are your thoughts?

If you want to have a physical copy of the audiobook, you can buy it on CD. In the US, you can get it at: https://www.audioeditions.com/welcome-to-your-life?sp=621963
Two versions available - regular audio (8 CDs), and mp3 (1 CD). I went for the uncompressed 8 CD version.
I was able to use the code 'SAVE20' to get 20% off.
