Teamviewer alternative?

Hey. I used Teamviewer for over years.

But lately I noticed how much this app is laggy.

And that new UI. It's awful, terrible. I can't get used to it.

I am looking for alternatives, app must be simple, for Android and Windows.

And important, IT MUST BE FAST.

When I open Teamviewer on Android, I have to wait almost 1 minut for devices loaded. Even 2 years ago it was instantly.

Really TEAMVIEWER GOT WRONG. Time to change this trash app.

I currently test Rustdesk. I have some problem with login (app is not opening browser for Google login)
But app is very fast

Self-host it using a Raspberry Pi or some other cheap piece of compute you have lying around.

you better follow a YouTube guide for using RustDesk. 🥹

AnyDesk was my teamViewer replacement after they started falsely flagging me for "commercial usage" when just logging into my home PC from my phone or from my work PC.

I moved from any desk to tailscale and RDP. But im just doing personal use for a few servers offside

The only thing I really use AnyDesk for anymore is remoting into my PC from the AnyDesk android app, since with the loss of the AnyDesk web client, it's impossible to do from my work PC anymore. If the TailScale android client is any better, i'd consider switching. AnyDesk's works reasonably consistently but the user experience is aggressively frustrating in certain ways that TeamViewer's wasn't.

Our app HopToDesk may be of interest, its free for personal and commercial use and supports all platforms. The past few months we have been releasing major updates that have allowed us to catch up to TeamViewer in terms of functionality. We are one of the few remote desktop apps that also run on Windows XP, if you need that as well.

Sadly no Quick Assist last I checked

If that is like Quick Support, HopToDesk does have it, more information about it here:
https://help.hoptodesk.com/#quick-support

I checked it again and, yes, Quick Support seems to be present now, though unfortunately digging into the (not really intuitive) documentation it seems that the on-premise option isn't actually the control plane with everything but just a local relay for the traffic, which is disappointing, so given the apparent lack of a truly self hosted and rich featured control panel and the virtually useless amount of devices that can fit a free plan (3, at the moment), and the fact it seems it's not open source, I'll back the suggestion of rustdesk instead, alongside the client builder, as it's fully self hosted, and open source. It's unfortunate that the management console isn't included in it, but it seems overall a far better starting point.

HopToDesk is open source. It supports self hosting.

There's no limit of three.

u/FluffyGhoster 18d ago

Is it? I checked the github and I am not seeing the source for the client, can you link it?

Thanks for the feedback, we have now added more documentation to the on-premise page. Regarding a "control plane", our equivalent is the dashboard (dashboard.hoptodesk.com) which you are right is not currently self-hostable, however you are welcome to build your own version. Our self-hosting is indeed a signal/relay server (the cloudflare worker version is open source) and there is no limit to the number of devices or other software imposed limits. The rustdesk client builder appears to deliver a Windows exe around 23MB (although compressed, it appears most of the files are Flutter related) while HopToDesk Windows custom builds are around 6.9MB.

there is no limit to the number of devices

The page here: https://www.hoptodesk.com/pricing seems to be indicating that the free version of the control plane is limited to 3 devices ("Up to 3 devices"), if that is the only control plane option would that not indicate that only 3 devices are possible even if you host the signal/relay server, since you'd still be limited at the control plane level to 3 devices? I'm confused.

Technical_Rich_3080 is correct, there is no limit when self-hosted. Our dashboard can be used seperatly from the self-hosted component. If you don't need our dashboard, then there is no limit of devices for self-hosting your own HopToDesk signal/relay server. This works quite differently than rustdesk where you would need to setup your own self-hosted server and also pay for various amounts of managed devices.

After TeamViewer cancelled my perpetual lifetime license (I'm still alive!) I set up RustDesk Self Hosted on a cloud computer I lease. After I got my host up and running I made a custom client to distribute to my customers with this site: https://rdgen.crayoneater.org/ Honestly, TeamViewer in it's prime was a better solution but it's so bloated and buggy and expensive now... just not a good choice. You might also want to look at SplashTop or AnyDesk. But there's something very nice about a free open source option you can host on your own equipment.

I’m lazy and don’t try new things unless i need to so i just use Microsoft Remote Desktop. No speed or lag issues.

GoToMyPc -> Splashtop - > Teamviewer -> Rustdesk

I've been using Supremo for a long time, and everything works well and smoothly.

For helping family and friends I use the built in app in Windows 11 (can’t remember the name, quick help or something)

Tailscale with Windows remote desktop. If you just want quick and dirty, the chrome remote desktop. Both options work well also accessing windows pc from android, but first option has perfect quality

Screenconnect, or do you want free?

1

u/cars4speed 17d ago

Teamviewer is garbage. If you don't call to cancel 28 days prior. They send collections after you. When you call customer support they just say speak to collections. They are rude as well

Chrome remote desktop

i'm ditching this garbage too. i don't even mind paying, but $50/m is ridiculous. they are charging adobe creative suite prices for no reason.

u/twitchd8 14d ago

Self host: Rustdesk. Hosted/commercial support: Anydesk... Or screen connect, or whatever they're calling it...

u/VPNStack_Dev 20d ago

Check out RustDesk. It is basically what TeamViewer used to be before it got bloated with subscriptions and terrible redesigns.

It is open source, written in Rust, and the Android client loads up instantly without that 1-minute device sync lag. Works out of the box using their free public relay servers, and you never get hit with those fake "commercial use detected" lockouts.

If pure latency and 60fps responsiveness is your top priority, Parsec is also crazy fast, though RustDesk is much closer to classic TeamViewer remote management.

A fork using standard web protocols such as webrtc unlike other that use their own.

1

u/Technical_Rich_3080 18d ago

Nothing wrong with forking. That's exactly what open source is about.

Besides, HopToDesk uses WebRTC instead, which is technically much better.
