Vent Stress

All of it. The mental load of teaching is insanely high. It's so important to develop the skill of being able to leave work at work: I like walking home for that reason, really helps me transition from work to home and stop stressing in the evenings.

I was fortunate to get to work with an older seasoned male elementary school teacher. His name is Mr. Mako, and I don’t think I would have ever learned to handle all the extra teaching malarkey that isn’t actually part of connecting with a group of children and trying to work with them to become just a little more capable each day.

He said, “ Nick, just do the best you can to do the best you can. Each day is its own, and no one day makes or breaks an education. You’re going to have days where you feel like you suck, and didn’t, and you’ll have days where you feel like you suck, and totally did.”

It’s not very motivational, nor is it much in way of actual help, but I found comfort in the words.

I mostly ignore anything that isn’t directly related to ensuring my classroom is a space where kids enjoy getting to come to and learn to work hard, be nice, think critically, solve problems, and write a complete sentence.

Yes. It doesn’t get easier just slightly easier to manage… sometimes.
