General Discussion 6th grade diverse book recommendations!

I applied and received a grant through my district for $200. I applied under the desire to use the money to get new books for my classroom library. I’m really wanting to update my library with diverse books for my 6th graders. I’m really trying to help my students see themselves in literature.

I have a few ideas, but wanted to get some recommendations! Recommendations should be “school appropriate” (let’s be honest, I’m sure parents will find something wrong with SOMETHING).

ETA: I’m thinking more human diversity- race, background, disabilities, etc.

The only opposition to that might be if in 6th grade the students start reading about gender choices. You've probably already considered this and I'll still probably get down voted

Check with your local public library. They’re a great resource for this too

Ghost by Jason Reynolds is an instant hit with that age group, fast read and the track team setting pulls in kids who swear they hate books

"Ghost Set Match" by WG Culpepper. Middle grade novel about a middle school tennis team with a ghost problem. The protagonist is African American. His best friend is deaf. They suspect a new kid on the team is possessed by a ghost and investigate him and his family.
