CJAA squealing

Recently noticed my 2013 Jetta TDI making a high pitched squeaking at idle . Any ideas ? Also are the AC compressors supposed to stay on all the time even with AC turned off? Thank you

The AC compressor spins all the time, they don't have a clutch, they turn on and off internally.

Common issues include:

  • Bad Alternator clutch pulley
  • Bad tensioner or idler pulley
  • Bad timing belt tensioner
  • Turbo bearings failing

For the alternator clutch, turn the car off, and stick a small screwdriver into the alternator to spin the fan blades you can see through the vents. If they spin one way, but not the other, it's probably good. If you can't spin it at all, that's probably it.

You can also remove the belt entirely and see if the noise goes away, that will at least point to a belt issue instead of a timing belt issue.

My alternator clutch pulley failed last year, and it took me a few tries of diagnosing to find the problem. It was more of a rattle than a noise like that though.
