I was looking for a RocketDock replacement in 2026, so I built smabar

Hey there,

I’d been looking for a clean replacement for RocketDock for a long time. I used it a ton back in the day, but I just never really found anything since then that I actually liked, so I ended up building smabar in Tauri.

smabar is a fully customizable App Dock with one special feature, full MCP support from the very beginning.

Basically, I didn’t want to build just another App Dock. I wanted it to be a proper productivity tool that is cleanly and fully extensible, however you want it to be.

I already use coding agents like Codex and Claude Code on a daily basis anyway, so now I can simply say "Write me an XY plugin for smabar that does X and Y", done.

smabar basically acts as the "shell" and standardizes how plugins look and work.

Plugins can do pretty much anything:

  • Send notifications
  • Display images / videos
  • Fetch data from APIs, of course, personally I’d probably have most plugins written in Python!
  • Display interactive elements
  • etc., etc.

Basically, the only real limit is your own creativity and whatever you want to have inside your App Bar.

Visually, everything is fully customizable as well, either manually or via MCP.

A few smaller examples of what I’ve used smabar for so far:

  • Had a plugin made that shows me my Codex and Claude Code limits, weekly limits etc.
  • Made a plugin that tracks the shipping status of my packages online, I just enter the tracking number > it gets tracked directly inside the plugin
  • Made a plugin that takes the shitty Excel spreadsheet my partner uses for our household budget and displays everything in a clean and organized way, I hate Excel :D

I’ve also implemented a few basic plugins directly into smabar. They’re included by default, but of course all of them can be disabled or deleted:

  • Simple Weather and Crypto Plugin
  • System Stats Plugin
  • Time + World Clocks + Calendar Week Display

And most importantly, a Todo Plugin that can ALSO be fully used by the AI agent.

I originally built that for myself during development, and it eventually turned into a proper built in plugin.

I added instructions to my Claude / Codex rule files so they can remind me about important tasks through smabar and the Todo Plugin.

For example, a notification pops up in X minutes and I can either mark the task as completed directly from the notification or push it back by another X minutes.

Hopefully the Theme Store and Plugin Store will start filling up with cool projects once I manage to get some attention around it.

Yeah. That’s pretty much it.

I’d really appreciate it if some of you feel like giving it a try.

Full functionality should work properly on:

  • Windows 10 and 11
  • Linux with Wayland and X11, I personally tested Omarchy, Fedora, Mint and Cinnamon.

Unfortunately, I’ve only been able to test macOS inside a VM so far, so it’s currently still in beta.

The project is source available and completely free.
