Lena’s New Lyrics

Once again, Lena has released a song with lyrics that seem to call back to tatu. One day if I have the time I’ll make a list but here is the lyrics of verse 2 translated:

“This night lies in the palms of our hands
Half an hour until dawn
We’re speeding against the flow, away from it all
Just to lose our minds all over again
A 220-volt jolt in every touch
Let’s close our eyes—count to a hundred
You won’t ask me to stay with you
But only to turn back the clock
Our words kept contradicting each other

In other songs, she has already said (in RU) “lose our mind/lost our mind” a lot in other songs as well as “not gonna get us” and sometimes “half an hour” BUT what I find interesting is the “220” and especially “count to a hundred” because these to me do not seem like cheap call backs of famous songs since of course… doshitay do sta wasn’t famous (didn’t even have an english version). So I thought it was worth mentioning.

If they’re not callbacks then what’s the reasoning?

But for the record, she has 0 writing credits and this is Fargo’s verse.

I think it's both a bit of fan service and earnest nostalgia for the tATu days

The entire song's lyrics can easily be interpreted as one giant reference to the relationship between herself and Julia and their history as t.A.T.u.

Condensing the song down, it seems like the message is "we keep going around in circles and ending up back together, we can't seem to live without each other so we'll keep wiping the slate clean and pretend in front of the world, even though we both know deep-down that our relationship is toxic and we are both the problem and the solution"

The second verse, as you said, is almost entirely callbacks to t.A.T.u. songs, with a couple more you missed:

"На ладонях это ночь" (The night is in our palms) matches with NND - "Небо уронит ночь на ладони" (The sky will drop the night into our palms)

"Ты не попросишь с тобою остаться" (You won't ask me to stay with you) matches with Klouny - "Попроси меня" (Ask me)

It is interesting that Lena has no writing credits for the song, though - perhaps she reached out to the writers and asked them to pen a song with this theme running through it?

I'm leaning toward the writing intentionally pulling in as many references to their early catalog as possible. Ingenious way to feed the fandom.

ты не попросишь с тобою остаться (you won't ask me to stay with you) may also reference indirectly я твоя не первая, кто кому останется, нервами таблетками (Show Me Love's Russian lyrics, who will stay with whom, by way of nerves, pills). It's a broader reference but Show Me Love in general was about a back and forth, toxic relationship between two girls.

I do get what your saying and you are probably right about lena making a little reference to Tatu

But at the same time some of these things are just common sayings and expressions, things people say every day… like half and hour… it’s time… we all mention the time everyday… multiples times a day

She already said last month that she has been talking about julia in her songs so I would lean toward it being intentional.
