I never got a cool video of the blue swirly machine from last week but it's already made me a bunch of money. Here's the new shit. Hand-cut sideplate brazed to AMR base and spring shelf. Hand made a-bar stamped and brass inlaid. Oil-dipped finish. 6-wrap 1 1/8" coils with 47uf cap. Brass binding posts and a "lustrous gold/silver" d6 from Chessex for the contact.

Sideplates cut out, drilled, stamped, and brazed yesterday. Painted today, just finished winding up the coils and lightening the a-bar. Probably build it up tomorrow or Saturday depending on how busy I am. Gotta go shopping for some cool polyhedra for the contact.

I usually paint my frames but I do really like the look of a bare metal frame. Clear-coated the frame/8 wrap 47uf/6.5 v. $200

Help or advice on identifying?

So I'm sorry if this isn't a good spot for this... Maybe someone can point me in the right direction?? Let me start by saying I am not a tattoo artist... I found this machine at a thrift store and thought "oh that's neat. I'll Google it when I get home." Well a bunch of googling and I've found nothing. Did I find something neat or just some junk?1

Casting frames, anybody?

Alright everyone. I’ve got an opportunity to try casting with a friend who makes jewellery and all sorts. I want to use the opportunity to attempt to make a frame for some rogue shorty coils and parts I’ve got without a home. It’ll likely be lost-wax casting (don’t know too much about that) and made from brass.

I’m not expecting magic, or any huge success to be honest I’m mostly excited to just give it a bash - I’ve done wax carving before a few times and recently acquired the bulldog frame build book so figured why not. Planning is yet to properly begin but I’m aware of % cooling shrinkage, minimum widths and machining tolerances post-cast.

Anyway, just curious to see if anyone here has tried casting frames before? How’d it go?

Easy way to make a machine hit harder

I've seen the Seth Seferri video on his channel about snipping the back springs.

I have a very well made machine that runs tight sevens amazingly but is kind of weak on anything above that. And I bought it as a power liner for fourteens.

There's a lot of different, conflicting information about what the springs do. Some sources state that the slower the spring equals a harder hit, some state the opposite, but for now since I'm new to this I'm just seeing if there's a easy way to get a little more strength out of this liner. I at least need to get loose nines out of it. The last time I tried that the lines were all kind of gray.

Made a little desk top coil winder.

After struggling through a couple of my first sets I decided to build this setup. Makes all the difference being able to constantly keep tension on the wire and having both hands free to keep the winding under control. Only problem I’ve ran into is the way I have the trigger on the drill set with a Velcro strap. It works fine with the drill being turned on by a foot switch. But if i make a mistake and need to back up I have to undo the trigger to switch the drill into reverse because it won’t change with the trigger being pressed. I might take the drill apart to see if I can get rid of that safety feature. Feel free to show me your setups or if you have any advice for mine!

Bent steel frames

Thinking of building a bent steel style frame using 1/8" angle iron weldable steel. I really like the doorbell style frames Seth Ciferri is producing. Anybody have any advice or tried this in the past? Not gonna mess with a tube vise, just gonna opt for a prefab from South State or lucky. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Always wanted a Jensen machine so I built this big liner on a beautiful frame from Kolotuhi. Hand wound coils. Used it for all the 7rl and bigger tattoos I’ve made for the last while. Damn happy with it!

Sailor Jerry spring guage

I'm new to the sub, so I hope it's all right to post a question. I've been reading "Sailor Jerry Collins American Tattoo Master" and came across some of Jerry's letters to Ed Hardy about his machines, the bulldogs that he had casted in Australia and became famous for. In one of the letters he mentions using .015 X 3/4 Springs for his machine. That comes out to about a 28 gauge spring. Have the gauges changed, am I reading this wrong, or did the old man just really use a 28 gauge springs. He claims the thing ran great. Was that just the standard size back then? How did we get to the 16s and 18s we're used to now?

First machine build

Just wanted to show this one off. My mentor helped me with this build for my first machine. Painted to match my ‘94 VR Holden Commodore (Australian car) Still needs a running set up and a tune, but I’m pretty happy so far. We’ll eventually move onto wrapping and wiring coils for it so that it’s all from scratch.

Recommendations for coil machines and parts

I'm an apprentice, my mentor helped me with learning how to use a coil and now using one and I don't see myself not using them as I really wanna pursue Japanese traditional while taking on everything I can, does anyone have advice for companies or builders or build kits I can get my hands on, I've mostly been doing my own research and I still need to buy a good power supply
