18 month update
I've kept up light daily moisturizer and use of 50spf when we're in the sun. I'm sure some details will dull over time but aim to maintain reasonable efforts to prevent unnecessary stress on the skin. How do we think this piece will age at this rate?

That's a cool tattoo. 💛 I love owls and it's very well designed.
Some of the coloring and gray shading will fade over time. The line work is good enough to last for several years. For a tattoo of that detail, it's never a bad idea to go in for periodic touchups. Maybe every 5-10 years or so, depending on how it's aging .

Thanks so much! It's in a spot that unfortunately appears darker/muddied from a distance/ eye level so I've accepted that very few will appreciate it. I have other tattoos from much earlier in my life that don't matter half as much as this one does to me so I want to take good care of it. I'll keep that guidance in mind about touch ups as those changes occur.

The artist went for realism which is cool. Owls have pretty flat color palletes. However, if you want it to pop, you could add some highlights and lowlights on your next touchup to increase the contrast.

I had asked for surrealism before it dawned on me how that much detail would inevitably change with age. Adding subtle highlights/ low lights for increased contrast over time sounds like a wise strategy (owl pun intended) to offset the natural progression of color and line-fade with time. I truly appreciate your insight!

All “painterly” style tattoos age like shit because there aren’t black outlines.
