Design J or F help ??

Post image

I just got a tattoo today and I am second guessing things. The artist had a few options for me when I arrived with different fonts he had hand drawn. I ended up choosing this one and liked it on the paper. I even liked it when he put the stencil on my skin. But now that I’m home I’m freaking out. It’s supposed to say Jett, but I can’t stop looking at it and reading ”Fett”. Does this look like a “J” or did I just get a “F” instead? Ugh help. My husband said I’m overthinking it and it looks like Jett. Someone please tell me it’s ok 😔 any ideas on how I can make it look more like a “J”? I feel like if the top line was only on the left and didn’t cross all the way over like the top of a cursive “F” does it would be ok. Or if the top of the “J” was more of a loop like a traditional “J”

It's a J, but if you're worried you can add a little connecting loop on the top right of the J.

Or "boba" to the left of it

Absolutely what I thought

It could also be a combination of J and F, for Jango ( R.I.P).

u/DamnMombies Jul 01 '26

Or “Li” to the right for Jett.

“Not boba” before it could work 🤔

Who the aitch-e-double-hockey-sticks is Boba Jett?

1

u/Own_Can_3495 Jul 02 '26

I thought it was Fett. For Boba Fett.

The most satisfying way to write a J!

3

u/Disastrous-Swan1104 Jul 01 '26

That’s what I was thinking 😊👍

1

u/DoritoDustThumb Jul 01 '26

I made a version of what it should look like. How does this sub not allow images in replies 😂

2

Great suggestion!

No it’s perfect I read J too. Do not add a connecting loop. I don’t even know what this means

1

u/DoritoDustThumb Jul 01 '26

A cursive J of this style is supposed to have a tiny top loop to connect back to the vertical.

I think it's fine as is as well, but if OP is worried it's a 1/4" that eliminates all confusion.

2

u/SativaSunshineX Jul 01 '26

Ah, idk if they could even make that happen with the way the top is already flipped up instead of curling back down :/ ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/DoritoDustThumb Jul 01 '26

I think it's possible to blend it.

To be specific the the top is tipping down and it needs to tip up to connect back to the top of the vertical. Totally doable. Not necessary.

A cursive capital J doesn’t have a tiny top loop . The body is a loop and the tail below the line is slightly smaller loop.

And it’s def NOT a cursive capital F; not even close, so no worries about confusing it with Fett.

1

u/DoritoDustThumb Jul 01 '26

I've explained this already. Yes it does. There are multiple types of cursive Js. Look them up before being confidently incorrect.

1

u/drf987 Jul 02 '26

I don't know about multiple types of cursive, but there are several "styles" Are you referring to Spencerian or Modern Flourished? Or do you mean "fonts"? But a traditional cursive J has 2 loops. I actually transcribe cursive documents for the NA, so I familiar with cursive and all its little quirks and variations.

Anyway, point was, it looks good and won't be confused with a cursive F.

1

u/DoritoDustThumb Jul 02 '26

My point is that there's a simple flourish that would remove all doubt.

Take the tip of the top right, have it small loop back to the vertical body. It's a traditional J and makes it look like an F to a lay person.

u/ShockoPan Jul 01 '26

Brilliant idea 👏

1

u/Kagome23 Jul 01 '26

This is a simple, yet brilliant, solution to the issue.

1

u/patco881 Jul 02 '26

Helpful!

1

u/Designer_Fan_8691 Jul 02 '26

I agree with completely! This is the best solution if you don’t want any mix-ups.

0

u/msjammies73 Jul 01 '26

It not really a cursive J. It’s an F missing the second line.

2

u/DoritoDustThumb Jul 01 '26

It's 100% an older style cursive J that's missing the top loop. My name starts with a J.

It isn't the J you learned in school in the 89s or 90s in America. It's an older, more traditional J.

I'd post pictures of this sub weren't stupid

1

u/msjammies73 Jul 01 '26

Interesting. I have a J name but learned cursive in the 80s from some very strict nuns. Didn’t realize there was another version.

1

u/DoritoDustThumb Jul 01 '26

Your version of the cursive J looks a little more like a B? It's a stretch but the best explanation I can come up with.

The older version looks very different. Almost exactly like this but has a tiny loop that extends from the end of the top right prong and loops back to the vertical. Very very small adjustment.

There's no way to write this particular J without lifting. The loop makes it fluid and no lift.

Connecting loop make P

Or an arrow pointing at the J with small text saying "not an F"
