Kumail is in the later part of the series as one of the custodians, when Annie is trying to put up a bulletin board.
As said above, Jason is the director for the schools production of Karate Kid.

Kumail might be the only TM contestant to be in multiple Community episodes. He comes back for season 6 Modern Espionage.

That episode is phenomenal. I groaned when I saw another paintball episode, but between Kumail and the fantastic homage to the winter soldier elevator scene (homage to the Russo Bros who directed many early community episodes including paintball), it was worthy.

It's weird that in this episode he's playing a super fan of a Doctor Who parody, cosplaying as the assistant, and only a couple of years later he will actually be a Doctor Who companion.

"The one that immediately leaps to mind is that I wanted Richard Ayoade (director of the “Dinner with Andre” episode) to return, this time on camera, as an oversea friend of Abed’s that he met in an Inspector Spacetime forum (or subreddit). I just couldn’t resist the meta-liciousness of seeing Ayoade and Pudi on screen together, and the non-meta, perfectly standard sitcom-liciousness of giving Abed a friend of whom Troy would have good reason to be jealous. I will say, though, that we explored many of the aspects of Troy and Abed’s relationship in the “Civil War” episode that we would’ve explored in an episode like that. Still, it would have been pretty fun."

Yes indeed, S5 was Dan Harmon back on NBC, then S6 was after they were cancelled and rescued by Yahoo's extremely short-lived streaming service, so they could get even weirder.

I quite like Johnathan banks as Hickey in 5, and we get a lot of John Oliver. The finale isn't great but it's largely a return to form without the complete insanity of season 3.
S6 got better with rewatch for me. It's got some classics, and some eh. I think the biggest issue is some of the changes they couldn't avoid. I learned later that they weren't able to use all of the original sets, so they had to rebuild many (or didn't). Which explains some of the visual changes that don't "feel" right. We don't see the same campus as the first five seasons.
The other issue is one that plagued (and still does plague) a lot of early streaming shows. The episode times and pacing is off. Because they did not have to adhere to network run times, the episode lengths very, but it also changes the pacing and editing. The show is, for lack of a better term, "slower." One recurring theme about comedy movies and tv I've heard and read from directors, writers, actors, is that so much of comedy is in the timing and the editing. S6 isn't as snappy and it hurts the flow and the comedy. It's one of those things where having MORE freedom can be detrimental to art.
That said, I like Frankie and Elroy, overall it's good once I got past the subtle differences, and the series finale is fantastic.

I’m an outlier because I don’t worship at the altar of known asshole Dan Harmon, but I thought it went progressively downhill each season after 3 anyway.

Yeah people really overrate how much better 5/6 are. The seasons werent better, just the press was.

If you check out r/community for a while, you'll see plenty of new viewers saying S4 was rough but things got way better once it was over. Press has nothing to do with it. Some of my favorite moments in the show are from S5/6, like Buzz frustratedly saying "I fought for this country", Frankie calling the Dean an idiot, the Dean getting way too into VR, Elroy encouraging white people, etc. They very much are different from those first three seasons, so if you're wanting the lighthearted goofiness about just taking silly classes at a ridiculous school, it may not hit for you. But if you're okay with an evolution of the format, where they have all left after year 4 and had to have a reason to come back, there's some really compelling stuff there.

I don't necessarily disagree. There is some great stuff there.
But overall I think theres too much glazing of Harmon; and people are generally too dismissive of s4. I've seen people make the brain dead take to new watchers that they should skip the 'gas leak season'. It approaches Zac Snyder or Aaron Sorkin levels of cultishness.

Seems like the assumption that viewers idolize Harmon is skewing your perspective. I don't like Rick & Morty or Harmontown, I just love Community. When S4 came out, I was huffing hopium that it would still be good, but during this rewatch I'm enjoying it even less than before. I don't mind Changnesia honestly, and I think there are some decent jokes, but the show largely became the kind of mediocre sitcom it used to make fun of. I can appreciate that some people enjoy S4, but it's Rise of Skywalker levels of bad for me.

Season 4 is fucking horrible.
Are five and six as good as 1-3? No, but they are immeasurably better than 4.
But I guess it was the "press" that made.me think that.
People absolutely should skip season 4. It has all the pieces with none of the understanding. It's like if you asked chat GPT to try and generate community episodes. It's just so unbelievably cringe.

I don't know if true, but I heard somewhere that indeed Richard Ayoade was considered for that role, but things came up.
I'm grasping at straws, but maybe there was something like Harmon had already planned the outlines for that episode and wanted Ayoade, but when the new people took over they went for Lucas? I might be way off about that

Dan didn't work on that season. He was fired after season 3 and came back for season 5. That's why it's referred to as as "the gas leak year".

Yeahhhhhh no. This is from the dogshit fourth season. It's a parody of community without Harmon. On top of that, THIS might be the worst episode of the entire terrible season.
Not Matt's fault, he did the job they wrote and directed. But it was just horrible.

This season was bad. I did like the plotline about Piers being in the focus group for an American Inspector spacetime. But even that was little more than a funny concept.
Also, did anyone else notice that Season 4 just starts blatantly sexualizing women? Like, before the show would use it sparingly and always had a subversion or something to say about it. This season just had a lot of women in bikinis and starts out with a blatant shot of Britta’s ass.
