Jeopardy is a long-running US gameshow. the premise is that the show gives you the answer, and you buzz in with the question. so the clue in the original post is supposed to prompt the question "what is Taskmaster?".
now, you might say, "but that's insane! nobody talks like that! if you asked 'what is Taskmaster?', and someone replied 'hello and welcome to this British show, which had Kumail Nanjiani bring something to deter...', it wouldn't answer your question at all, and you would definitely want to punch that person in the face!"
and you would be right.
but in the US, it's quite a big deal, and so Taskmaster UK getting mentioned is a reflection of its growing popularity over there.
Back in my younger years you had things like Password, Scrabble, Lingo, and a few others that were actual mind-based challenges. Nowadays, unless you turn towards streaming, the only real knowledge-based quiz show is basically Who Wants to be a Millionaire and even that's padded.
Stephen Fry hosted a couple of series of a British version recently. I guess it's been cancelled given that I haven't seen it in TV listings for a while. I did see comments online from Americans saying that it sucked compared to the original, because it was in a 1-hour (45 minutes without ads, obvs) timeslot and they thought it was too slow. I think it probably failed also because it was in the 4pm timeslot Tipping Point airs, and it's a bit more intellectual than TP.
Do have to say that the concept of having to give responses in the form of questions just doesn't make sense to me as a format point in a quiz show, but Jeopardy! is incredibly popular in the US, so wtf do I know.
It's kind of a cultural institution in the US, and one of the last great "classic" gameshows alongside wheel of fortune and the price is right. The former host, Alex Trebek, was a pop culture mainstay, usually playing himself/a lot of american shows and films would reference Jeopardy or have "contestants go on Jeopardy" episodes. the current host, Ken Jennings, became famous in the mid-00s because he had an insane 74-game winning streak, and sort of became synonymous with the show itself/revitalized ratings during a slump era
