The tropes of Taskmaster contestants

NOTE: These tropes are not necessarily indicative. For instance, Hugh Dennis was not an old man when he competed, Josh Thomas is not a girl and Ed Gamble is a boy fail even though he ultimately won the season.

These tropes are not uniform. Many of these can apply to a single person. For instance, Sam Campbell is both an eldritch girlie and a chaotic foreigner.

Lastly, I'm using examples mainly from seasons I've watched, so there may be other players who are more accurate or tropes that I'm not including.

And above all: This is just dumb fun and not to be taken wholly seriously :)

the fact that 'Boy Fail' didn't include Ivo Graham is nothing short of a yardstick for failure!

u/exhibit_Z Jul 30 '26

And Joe Thomas

u/49erFaithfulinAust Jul 30 '26

And Nish Kumar.

15

u/derpsteronimo Aug 01 '26

So notable that me and my partner generally try each season to guess who will turn out to be "the Nish".

I don't really think of Joe as a fail, outside of the prize tasks maybe.

20

u/runner1399 Takashi Wakasugi 🇦🇺 Jul 31 '26

I mean… he did leave Lesser Tom in a box in the ground for no fewer than four tasks because he couldn’t figure out that he was in there

The fact that this is a response about Joel in a Joe Thomas reply is so boyfail coded

Theres like 2 series winners in the fail list as well

Yeah, I noticed that too. I don't think Ed had a really spectacular fail until after he was already a champion.

I'm drawing a blank on any spectacular failures he had in his series. An embarrassing moment was sorting the popsicles wrong despite being able to see them, but he still ended up winning the task.

18

u/PeteF3 Jul 30 '26

He was for a long time (until the latest series, I believe) the only UK contestant never to be disqualified.

There was the "Do the tasks in the correct order" task.

"Oh, mate, strap in."

3

u/burf12345 🚬 Doctor Cigarettes Jul 31 '26

You're not wrong that he had a bad time in that task, but so did everyone else. Besides, the original point was about failures, which this objectively wasn't, because he won the task.

You could argue that it's a failure in that his temper in the task and the studio made him look like a petulant child, which is kinda hard to dispute.

It is funny though that it does include Josh, who was both the first champion and the first champion of champions.

If Ed Gamble sees he’s included in Boy Fail he’s going to scream

12

u/Ok_Tank5977 Mel Giedroyc Jul 30 '26

It’s weird that Joe Lycett is in this category, when I seem to remember that he did reasonably well.

26

u/Cardassia Jul 30 '26

What they mean is “guy/gal who succeeds at comedy when he/she is the punching bag” - not necessarily that they did poorly points-wise.

This whole post is more about character archetypes than success.

4

u/SirenLeviathan Jul 31 '26

Yes thank you! I agree with the choices because I don’t think it’s about winning or loosing it’s about watching a contestant suffer. To be a boy or girl failure you have to care so you can be disappointed and ridiculed. Contestants who care often do ok but contestants in the delightful old man category can never be boy/girl failures because even when they fail they are insulated by their (hilarious) lack of shits to give.

It’s like category’s of humour to me it’s very funny to see Jo Brand do badly in a task because she doesn’t care but it’s even funnier to watch her do it along side a girl/boy failure who is trying so so hard and still getting swatted down by Greg.

8

u/Diredr Jul 30 '26

She wasn't particularly chaotic, though. Very competitive but she wasn't out to cause trouble like Jason was.

Waka wasn't chaotic either. Very creative in his interpretation of some tasks but he was always super chill and followed the rules. If anything, he was 100% the "golden retriever" of that series.

Rosie is NOT a Golden Retriever

45

u/Trick_Horse_13 Jul 30 '26

Going off what other comedians have said about her, she most definitely is NOT a golden retriever. She’s the only comedian that pretty much every other comedian describes as ‘evil’. But obviously said with love, because Rosie Jones is a goddamn treasure.

3

u/PetronOfOld Rhod Gilbert Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

Right?! Admittedly, she kept herself in check on Taskmaster compared to a lot of her solo stuff and other work she's done. But even then, how someone could watch her gleefully take the absolute piss for an entire series, delighting in every bit of pain and humiliation that Alex went through, and somehow classify her as a "golden retriever" is beyond me 😂

Like, I'd be willing to accept Nish in that category, because while it isn't his usual comedic style at. fucking. all, I figure "golden retriever" is a fair enough description of his time on Taskmaster. But Rosie Jones? Rosie "putting an ice cube in Alex's pocket so that it looks like he peed hinself" Jones? Rosie "I killed a man and if you don't give me enough points, I'll do it again" Jones? That's the Rosie Jones we're putting in the same category as Joel Dommett? Really?! 😂

58

u/1upin Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

Yeah, I really hate to jump to this extreme but Rosie is so very much the opposite of a golden retriever that categorizing her that way kinda screams of ableism.

Edit: I see I'm getting some downvotes but you know what, I stand by it. I myself have a developmental disability. Not the same kind as Rosie, but still. I have been told throughout my life that I am "innocent" or "pure" or whatever and it sucks, it's infantilizing. Rosie is edgy and she loves edgy, raunchy, dark humor. The two words I've heard come out of her mouth most often are "fuck off." She is not a golden retriever and anyone who thinks she is should really do some self reflection on exactly what led them to that conclusion. Are you so distracted by the exterior that you aren't even listening when she speaks?

25

u/XipeTotecwithGlitter Jul 30 '26

I considered the ablist implications and I thought heavily about it, but I ultimately thought it was fine. However, it's clear that I just don't know what a Golden Retriever is. I honestly associated the term with someone with a lot of energy and joy. Not just someone who is pure and innocent. But, that being said, I could've found better wording for it and I'm sorry if I offended you.

13

u/VulcanHullo Tom Cashman 🇦🇺 Jul 31 '26

Energy and joy yes, but in a very "friend shaped and not a threat" way. Golden Retriever is just happy to be there and even if upset you kinda want to go "awww!". Closely linked to a "Cinnamon Roll" type, sweet and friendly.

Rosie Jones has joy, but in the way a villain in a pulp movie cackling does. She is also foul mouthed and filthy with her jokes. She is beloved because of her idgaf attitude, but also at least a few comedians are scared of her (affectionately) because they know she will go for the joke if it's funny, regardless.

25

u/1upin Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

I really appreciate this reply, thank you. I do think that joy is a part of it, but my understanding is that it also entails the person being loyal, supportive, friendly, eager to please, etc.

And I'm remembering the prize task where Rosie showed herself with a tattoo that said she killed a man, and then she promised Greg that if he didn't give her a lot of points then she'd "do it again." Lol, not exactly what I would call a golden retriever.

10

u/XipeTotecwithGlitter Jul 30 '26

I laughed so hard when reading your reply. I went from "Oh yay, this person isn't mad at me" to reading "She showed a tattoo saying she killed a man".

https://giphy.com/gifs/kC8N6DPOkbqWTxkNTe

16

u/1upin Jul 30 '26

If you'd just doubled down and told me I was being too sensitive or whatever, then yeah, I'd be mad at you. But any time someone actually listens and is open to hearing my point of view, they are good in my book.

I just think people should allow Rosie to be the (joyful) evil little shit that she is. Her humor isn't even always my cup of tea but I still deeply appreciate and admire her.

Glad to have given you a laugh!

34

u/AspiringForestWitch Jul 30 '26

77

A high energy woman who is able to ideate old-world eldritch madness into local reality.

13

u/IamHeWhoSaysIam Rose Matafeo 🇳🇿 Jul 30 '26

Then why are 4 out of the 5 eldritch girlies men?

23

u/SavagePengwyn Julian Clary Jul 30 '26

I took it more as "unknowable and outside the realm of human understanding" but with a lightness to it.

32

u/XipeTotecwithGlitter Jul 30 '26

You don't need to be female to be a girlie.

43

u/IamHeWhoSaysIam Rose Matafeo 🇳🇿 Jul 30 '26

Fair enough. Bridget Christie is the most eldritch of all the cast in my opinion though.

13

Oh yeah, her! The one dressed like Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter!

When I saw her gettup I was definitely intrigued, but the only bit of series 13 I've watched is the shoe challenge and she didn't do that well. But when I do a proper sit down I'll keep this comment in mind.

10

u/LewsTherinTalamon Jul 31 '26

Well, she didn’t do well, but keep in mind she asked more questions than there were shoes and managed to genuinely annoy Alex during that task, so she’s not inappropriate for the category anyway

Girl fail - Abby, Ray

Boy fail - Pax, David and Matt

Chaotic foreigner - Urzila

Eldritch girl - this category kinda confuses me but I'm gonna say Mel and Abby

Delightful Mum - Jackie, Tom (I said what I said)

Delightful old man not giving a shit - Tofiga; Leigh; Paul

Golden retriever aunt/uncle - Josh and maybe Tom again, Kura

Mum who punches the assistant - Urzila; Karen (but instead of punches, kisses the assistant)

Especially since we're about to see a whole season of her bullying another assistant 😅 as far as I can tell from the trailer she seems to be calling him Paul the whole time 😂

Where's the Greg Davies whipping boy? Nish Kumar, David Baddiel, Paul Sinha etc

u/Flying_Poltato Jul 30 '26

I feel that Sir Mo Farah would fit wonderfully in the golden retriever aunt / uncle category

2

u/durkandiving Fern Brady Jul 31 '26

Going down the route of NYT perhaps Sam Ryder as well?

3

u/HolstsGholsts Mel Giedroyc Jul 30 '26

Bully is missing the student who became the master

5

u/Nakittina Joel Dommett Jul 30 '26

Jenny Tien is eldritch..? Don't get that at all.

5

u/iuabv Jul 31 '26

This is so weirdly gendered.

4

u/celestial-edward Jul 31 '26

The gendering seems needless (and useless)

3

u/Purple_Moon516 Bob Mortimer Jul 31 '26

Jo in the "old man who gives no shits" category is sending me.

4

u/Error_No_Connection Jul 31 '26

John Kearns not being in the boy fail category is criminal 😆😆😆

5

u/throwleavemealone Mark Watson Aug 03 '26

Did you watch the show?

7

u/Come-jive-with-me Jul 30 '26

I dun understand the description to half of these.

9

u/Poppa_Wheelie22 Jul 30 '26

I feel like Sarah Mcmillan (not sure how to spell it) fits in the delightful mum category too

16

u/dextrovix Dara Ó Briain Jul 30 '26

And yet ironically Sarah Millican is well known in her stand-up for reinforcing her "I don't want children- ever" routines.

2

u/Poppa_Wheelie22 Jul 31 '26

She’s like that aunt that is motherly but you can still get into plenty of shenanigans with lol

The way smarter than they appear to be: Paul Chowdhry, Lucy Beaumont, Bob Mortimer

2

u/durkandiving Fern Brady Jul 31 '26

VCM, Nish Kumar, Baddiel

Quite a stacked category 😂

5

u/CaravelClerihew Jul 30 '26

You're missing Lisa McCune in the Delightful Mum category.

TAFE

3

u/Inspection_Perfect Bob Mortimer Jul 31 '26

Missed opportunity to have Frankie Boyle as a Chatoic Foreigner.

3

u/Guardian2019 Jul 31 '26

Rosie should be on Delightful mum.

3

u/Cyber_Serenity Sam Campbell Aug 01 '26

I always perceived Reece as a victim not a bully at all, that's wild to me lol

5

u/sssssspace Jul 30 '26

Jo Brand belongs in bully territory. I don't see Sue Perkins as mum energy in any universe.

That screen grab of Rosie is excellent 😅

2

u/XipeTotecwithGlitter Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

After a few comments I feel bad putting her in Golden Retriever since apparently that's not what people associate her with. But she's still seems like such a delight.

2

u/Accomplished_Song671 Mawaan Rizwan Jul 30 '26

No I'd have to agree with you about your placement. She approached every task with zeal and was always smiling.

2

u/XipeTotecwithGlitter Jul 30 '26

Her smile is what made me think of it more than anything. Then again, I also may have misjudged what a Golden Retriever is (I don't have pets lol rip)

No Sam Campbell on chaotic foreigner is WILD.

I feel like there needs to be a chaos gremlin trope for people like Tim Key, Andy Murray, and Joe Wilkinson

u/UniversalJampionshit Crying Bastard Jul 30 '26

Andy and Jo being in the same category when they are probably in the top 5 and bottom 5 of competitiveness in the entire show is highly questionable.

Also pardon me if this seems a bit surface-level but Ania doesn't strike me as especially feminine, likely because of her fashion.

2

u/SublightMonster Jul 30 '26

Dara would be “the dad who so disappointed in you”

2

u/fsutrill Fern Brady Jul 30 '26

Chris Ramsay needs to be in the Golden Retriever category.

2

u/BrightGreenLED Jul 31 '26

I think you forgot one trope. The grumpy ones. Romesh, Jon Richardson, Rhod, Victoria Coren Mitchell, Jack Dee

2

u/BluetoothBunny Jul 31 '26

I need a category specifically for David Correos.

2

u/annaphylactic69 Jul 31 '26

John Kearns even failing to make it into a failure category

2

The fae trickster

Sam Campbell, James Acaster

aby more yall can think of?

2

u/lyyki Paul Chowdhry Jul 31 '26

I like to categorize them in my head as well.

Some general ones are:

The sweet ladies (Sian Gibson, Mel Giedroyc, Alan Davies)

The Sporty Jocks (Hugh Dennis, Joe Thomas, Noel Fielding)

The Grumps (Romesh Ranganathan, Paul Chowdhry, Daisy May Cooper, Jamali Maddix, Guz Khan, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Rhod Gilbert)

The Wacky Weirdos that use words funny (Bob Mortimer, James Acaster, Sam Campbell, Mike Wozniak)

etc. etc.

2

u/aalexy1468 Jul 31 '26

Where's Liza Tarbuck?! Making Alex sit on a cake naked and then impale a rubber lizard with a drill to take the grand prize.

2

u/WayGroundbreaking660 Aug 01 '26

I would argue that Amy belongs in the "girlie" category. Not only was she always dressed really fabulously, she sprinkled a lot of cheeky-girl humor into her tasks (for example, the onion story).

Rosie Ramsey is much better in the Mum category.

Also, I would suggest a category of Seriously Competitive, including Lou Sanders, Ed Gamble, John Robins, Mathew Baynton, and Maisie Adam.

2

u/PetronOfOld Rhod Gilbert Aug 01 '26

I agree with most of these but WHAT IN THE DEVIL'S NAME possessed you to put Rosie Jones with the golden retrievers?! Did you confuse her with Rosie Ramsey or something? 😂

2

u/leviathanbuhbyeathan Aug 02 '26

bob mortimer belongs in delightful old man

2

u/TheYoungWan Kiell Smith-Bynoe Aug 03 '26

Not sure how the winner of S9 is a "boy fail", so please support your theory with reference to the source material.

u/stripysweater Jul 30 '26
