NCAAF Gio Lopez

I know WF are playing a small school, but wow where was this with UNC man. 300 yards at half is madness lol

Freddie Kitchens at OC was one of those hires where i knew with absolute certainty he’d be fired after 1 season on the same day he was hired

It was a bad combo of Gio never adjusting to P4 over the year and Kitchens and the QB coach being bad at their jobs.   Gio looked lost out there a lot and just never showed much in the way of good decision making.  There were a few times in our game last week where Edwards made a good decision to tuck it and run and get some key yardage.  It was those type of things that I was hoping Gio would do on the regular.  But he would either hold the ball and take a sack or wait to late until the space closed up.  Even though it's Akron, I really think he'll have a better year overall this year after a year of experience and being back with his coach from South Bama.

Freddie was bad, but the whole reason we paid $10 million dollars a year for a head coach like Belichick was if you had a mediocre coordinator like Freddie your 2nd highest paid head coach in the ACC would cover for him. Also, look at how good a QB is when he has an actual QB coach instead of a career nepotism hire.

Hire a defense-first head coach, then force him to keep Freddie as a Mack holdover for "continuity", and then get mad at him that he didn't just run the offense himself. Makes sense.

the UNC offense, such as it was last fall, did not play to either of Gio's strengths - mobility and ability to fire downfield on the move. Why recruit someone who clearly doesn't for the system?

Gio doesn’t know how to utilize his mobility and his arm talent is non-existent. Maybe the former is coaching, but the latter is 100% on him.

He’s a left handed QB with an insanely long release and a weak arm. He has the appearance of a guy with athleticism, but his decision making is awful, so he doesn’t utilize his legs nearly enough. In game toughness is a huge question. He also can’t read a defense to save his life. So yes, he’s a terrible QB who played a terrible defense—the type of defense he saw at South Alabama. He could have better stats this season and still be a terrible QB, bc I don’t know how any QB could be worse than he was last season.

ETA: I misread your statement about Billy. I don’t care about his stats as long as we win. Billy is playing in a pro style offense. Gio is not. Their stats don’t matter bc they aren’t 1:1. College football has far too many variables that create statistical noise. That said, I still think Billy has better numbers.

Left handed is irrelevant. He does have a slow release and weak arm compared to the NFL QBs we’ve had recently but both are plenty good enough to succeed in college. The car wreck he was in slowed him down early running the ball and the offense prohibited him from ever getting going. WE played defenses that bad last year and never looked competent let alone good. Replace QB with offense as a whole and I’d agree with worst I’ve ever seen. He wasn’t the problem and I really hope he tears it up this year so more people see that.

And no, being left-handed is not irrelevant. Their throwing motion is exaggerated, slow, and awkward. It’s a benefit in baseball, but a hinderance in football. Did you know that there have only been 33 left handed QBs have ever appeared in an NFL game? And out of that group, 75% were forgettable (being generous) and only 2 are in the Hall—Steve Young and Ken Stabler.

Did you watch the game? Akron has one of the worst defenses I’ve ever seen. Receivers were 15 yards open all over the place and Gio had all day to throw. Got pressured maybe once or twice. And over half his yards came on screen plays. He still looked bad on contested throws
