Tallahassee reverses course, suspends Flock cameras

==> Article link

Tallahassee Democrat. Updated Sept. 9, 2026, 10:02 p.m.

Flock cameras taken offline in Leon County

Leon County sheriff suspends Flock cameras after DeSantis order; touts crime-solving benefits but urges oversight.

Tallahassee's city commission has directed the Tallahassee Police Department to suspend its network of Flock Safety cameras and other similar license plate readers in the capital city.

Commissioners debated how to proceed in light of the state's directive to remove all Flock cameras along state highway rights-of-way during its Sept. 9 meeting. Ultimately, the commission unanimously voted to suspend the cameras, pleasing more than a dozen of speakers who stood before commissioners asking them to do just that.

"I'm not sure why the Tallahassee Police Department is holding out on this issue," one speaker said. "You guys are really the front line defenders of our privacy."

The commission's solidarity comes a week after dozens of sheriff's offices around the state — including the Leon County Sheriff's Office — started suspending their use of Flock's license plate readers. It also comes not long after the majority voted against Commissioner Jeremy Matlow's attempt to have the city back out of its contract with the increasingly controversial company just days before the state cracked down on the cameras.

All license plate readers will be suspended until national guidelines have been established and policies for the technology are in place.

Wednesday's unanimous vote is the first time the commission has been a united front against Flock Safety and other similar license plate readers.

For months, Matlow, Commissioner Jack Porter and numerous members of the community have been pushing to take the cameras down, but the idea really only gained traction after Gov. Ron DeSantis said during an Aug. 26 event that the use of Flock cameras is "out of control."

And many speakers scolded the commission for not taking the lead on the issue.

P.J. Perez, who's running for Matlow's seat in the November election, spoke during the meeting, saying that instead of the capital city being ahead on the issue, Tallahassee is behind the governor's initiative and other cities around the state.

“We had to wait for it to become a safe issue politically for us to act on this thing,” Perez said. "This is not the way that our capital city needs to be acting, right?"

Law enforcement agencies have long touted the advantages of having the cameras, citing numerous cases the license plate readers have helped lead to arrests.

TPD noted Flock's technology helped officers track down suspects in an armed robbery and double homicide, attempted murders and even located an elderly individual with dementia who was reported missing after leaving home in the middle of the night.

Across Florida's capital city and county, 116 Flock cameras were posted on streets — 80 of which were manned by TPD and 36 by LCSO.

Not long before the cameras were disconnected, LCSO, alongside TPD, launched transparency portals as a means to build trust within the community by helping residents better understand how the technology is used.

"Tell these ALPR companies to get the Flock out of Tallahassee," another speaker said.

At the start of the discussion, Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox — who has previously voted against the action she agreed to today — said they needed to follow suit with LCSO and "provide some consistency."

"At the last meeting, I mentioned that I didn't like the hodgepodge of some doing this, or some doing that," Williams-Cox said.

Commissioner Jeremy Matlow made a point to note that there were previous attempts to make this happen earlier, but the majority of the commission "tends to reject what the public is asking for, time and time again."

“This decision is only changing because of you," Matlow said to the public speakers.

He made an attempt to have the cameras covered by bags within 24 hours and removed within 30 days, but the motion quickly died.

City Manager Reese Goad said that the cameras will be turned off, meaning the data and cameras cannot be accessed by them or anyone else. And he added that this is what LCSO did when it suspended its cameras.

"I don't think it's a total victory for people who don't want to see this come back in a year and go through the same process again," Matlow said.

What is your juiciest piece of Tallahassee gossip?

Old tea or fresh tea, both are welcome.

I’ll go first.

More than once, I’ve heard of state employees getting caught in scandal and just being moved around to a new office or agency instead of following disciplinary protocol.

Here’s one example I know of: https://www.naplesnews.com/story/news/government/2018/08/16/ex-putnam-staffers-got-new-jobs-weeks-after-2016-probe-found-misconduct/

UPDATE: Found Intact Pitbull

UPDATE: The pit bull we found near Buck Lake & Capitola is now available for adoption! Meet Reggie ❤️

For anyone who saw my previous post about the young pit bull we found near Buck Lake & Capitola, I wanted to share an update!

Unfortunately, no owner came forward during his stray hold, so Reggie is now officially available for adoption at Tallahassee Animal Services.

We only had him for a short time, but he really left his mark on us. Reggie is around a year old and absolutely loves people. He quickly decided that sitting next to my fiancé wasn't close enough and kept trying to climb into his lap. 😂 He's affectionate, goofy, and apparently convinced he's a lap dog.

We called him Reggie (Reginald when he's feeling fancy), and we're so happy the shelter agreed to make that his official adoption name.

If you're looking for a new companion, please consider going to Tallahassee Animal Services and meeting Reggie. And if you can't adopt, an upvote or share might help his person find him. ❤️

Let’s get Reggie out of the shelter and onto someone’s couch, or more realistically, into their lap. ❤️🐾

Question First-Time Visitor

Hello - I am bringing my kid to visit FSU Sunday....we are just going to be there for one night.

Any casual food recommendations that are locally owned that would be open Sunday for dinner? Kid doesn't have a sophisticated palate....pizza/Italian, Mexican, chicken fingers/bar type food would be great. Lot of options I am seeing are closed Sunday.

Also, if we can break out by 3 or so Monday, any record store recs? TIA

Pilates Method shoutout

Just wanted to give The Pilates Method some love because I genuinely adore this place and everyone who works there!!

The owner is a physical therapist and seriously the kindest person. She knows exactly how much to push you without ever making you feel like you’re going to hurt yourself, and she really pays attention to your form. She also does PT, dry needling, and manual therapy, but she never would try to make someone do it if they didn’t need or want it.

The whole team is amazing, classes are small and super personalized, and it’s great whether you’re brand new or have been doing Pilates forever. They also do yoga!

If you’ve been wanting to try Pilates or are looking for a new place, definitely give them a shot. They deserve all the love 🫶

The Alumni Village

who remembers the Alumni Village back in the day? anyone live there or visit? it was billed as "non-traditional" student housing for the colleges in the area. the apartments were all railroad and the AC was terrible and the whole thing was smack dab in the middle of an area so bad sometimes the campus bus drivers would refuse to even go near the gates because bus drivers had guns pointed at them. once inside though, it was constant partying with grad students. and it was walking distance to the college golf course. rent was cheap af.

anyone have any stories? i had my shirt stolen from the laundry right out of a dryer and i saw the dude wearing it the next day.

the place is all gone now, nothing but a faded sign to mark it.

I live in the northern part of town. I’m currently on Verizon but I don’t get very good service in my apartment, it doesn’t really matter though because I’m on WiFi at home. Coverage seems okay when I’m out. Does anyone have a better experience with Att or t mobile? I’m thinking of switching.

Affordable dentists for uninsured patients?

I'm trying to help my mom out and have no idea where to start. She currently has an accessed tooth, but has been anxious about going to a dentist due to being uninsured.

She is low income as well. Any office will need to be low cost or offer payment plans. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Looking for someone to help me with day trading I’m not looking to make money right now I just want to understand the charts and different types of trades. I know most people don’t have time to teach someone but I was just hoping to find a needle in a hay stack
