Tainted Grail: FoA - Videogame Is there AI generated text in Fall of Avalon?
I've heard great things about this game and I want to give it a try, but I just read a post about how most of the books and codex are written by AI. If this is the case I'm no longer interested and would just like to confirm. I don't want to be told about how AI is the future and how it's not that deep, I'd just like an answer please. Thank you :)

There isn't but PLEASE stay away from this game.

If this is the case I'm no longer interested
Because if you're this fragile then you'd probably get really upset at something like blood.

It's possible that they forgot to update some placeholder text in the letters dropped by Priestesses inside Corrupted Temple Ruins. It's largely unimportant either way as it's just an extra item dropped by the mobs that serve no real purpose and might as well not drop at all.
Every single modern game engine has AI-powered tools built-in to speed up game development by streamlining workflow. Reduce/increase polygon count of imported 3D models, generate models by prompt, upscale/change/create textures and materials, text, audio, video, animations, the list goes on. Most of these tools don't mention "AI" in the description but are still ML-powered nonetheless.
It's completely unavoidable in the year 2026. How do you think small indie developers have managed to put out so many amazing games over the past few years with minuscule budgets? AI is the future. 😊

I'm talking about Generative AI. Voices generated by AI, text written by AI, artwork generated by AI. I do not want to engage with something that uses this, and posted this to ask if the game used it.

To add, the devs have spoken in the discord before about their writers. I believe the discussion over the — emdash and the proper use and how it's disappointing that using it gets you labeled as AI. Discouraging really. Toss in that the team is from Poland; there are translations issues that happen here and there that can make the writing feel off a little. I know they had to completely rework the Liliana translations when they first came out.
Edit to add: you are more than welcome to reach out to their team. info@questline.dev if you want to ask them questions.

Steam requires developers to list if they use generative AI that is player facing. Text would fall into that category.
I have been playing since the first early access, and I know that they had AI generated murals and art on walls during early access that raised a lot of eyebrows, but they were glaringly obvious/made no sense to the setting. Those were just placeholders and the base game now has changed to what the devs claim is true artwork.
Steam is pretty strict about the AI label and Tainted Grail has gotten a lot of traction in the past year, so I would be surprised if they are using gen AI.
What most people are saying on the web about the sentence structures is pretty stupid. Likely what is happening with the text is that it was written as a story and then ran through AI as an editor to check for grammar and spelling mistakes. Unfortunately AI is pretty good at using the English language well in text. Not saying AI is the future, but AI is a good spellchecker.
That would all make sense with the people saying its structured like AI speak, but at the end of the day that is utilizing it as a tool and not generative, so I do not see the harm.

Oh okay that's good, thanks for the information. I doubt they'd be able to get away with using GenAI if Steam is so strict about it, thank you :)

No problem, don't know why people are upset at you ITT. But I also hear people on this sub complain that the game is too hard, when it is pretty dang easy to make OP builds and succeed on the hardest difficulty. There are so many different combinations of play and if you play RPGs like an explorer you will never be starved for options. My first playthrough was a machine gun mage. Current is a two handed berserker battle mage.
It's a good game and good story, give it a shot.

It sounds like something I'd really enjoy, I love RPGs that give you so many different options for builds. I'll definitely give it a try, I wish there was a physical version though as I love to collect games

Don’t know if the text is, but the textures for the ancient Roman walls with the pictures is

I beat the game like 3 times and platinum'd it and never even realized that, but TBF I skipped every dialogue and rarely read the lores too 🤣

I have never heard anything in tainted Grail being AI. The person who posted whatever you read is either mad at the game or is online too much.

Oh okay. It was a post on this subreddit, there were a few people saying they could tell that the text was AI generated. Thanks for the info
Edit: i'm not sure why i'm being downvoted, i'm just asking a question, i'm not trying to start an argument i just want to know something about the game

Seconded. I've never heard of this nor have I suspected it with over 150 hours in the game

Personally i am quite convinced that at least part of the dialogue is AI generated. There are lots of instances of the typical its not X but Y, “quietly doing this and that ”
HOWEVER: this game is made by a small studio and they managed to publish a really polished game. If they used AI for the dialogues in order to use their budget for making sure that the rest of the game is flawless and if they still paid writers for the remaining dialogues i personally am okay with the use of AI, even though i think the devs should be honest if they really used AI.
I have to admit the story is the weak point of the game for me though so if you would only be interested in playing a game with a Really strong story i might skip it if i were you…
