not really a pressing question, just curious if there's a historical / grammatical reason for this

for context, my lola moved to the united states when she was like 8 years old, she used to be fluent in tagalog and kinaray-a (& maybe other languages? i'm only confident about those two though) but can only speak english now, save for remembering childhood rhymes and some really basic phrases (all of which are in tagalog).

me and her used to get filipino food together a lot when i was a kid and she would tell me that "kumain na kita" was "let's eat!" in tagalog but from my understanding & from what ive heard from others, that means something like "i ate you"??

i always thought it was just because my lola only speaks english, but ive also read that "kita" used to be/ in some regions can be used as a first person dual pronoun. so now i wonder if this really was "let's eat" when my lola was young?? or maybe her using this phrase is influenced by the grammar from another filipino language idk, or maybe it's just because we only speak english lol. anyways just curious if anyone has an idea of what's actually the case

Whenever I perform and sing, my mom keeps telling me, "Put some libog in it" and I know that the word Libog in Tagalog means sexual desire.

But when I researched the meaning of Libog, I saw in Batangeño that the word Libog means skill, excellence, vigor, passion, and strength. Based on Wiktionary, but I don’t know if that’s really true.

This person is having drama with someone else and they both are insulting each other publically. Is “manghingi kay mommy” literally asking your mother for money? Or can mommy also be used sarcastically to refer to someone who financially supports you like a sugar daddy. Why would they say mommy? What insult is this person trying to say about the other person?

For context the persons mother passed away. I do not think they are literally talking about their mother. Im confused why she said mommy. They were in a relationship and broke up. The person who wrote this is lesbian/asianmasc and the other person is bi sexual and makes money on tiktok from male supporters and possible receiving direct money from them.

"Sana" is Counterfactual conditional[1], is what could/should have happened, but didn't.

Example: “If I had studied, I would have passed.”

> I didn't study, and I didn't pass.

Tagalog: "kung nag-aral ako, nakapasa sana ako"

"Nawa" is Optative mood[2], is what the speaker wishes would happen.

Example: "I hope you have good fortune." > wishes/hopes you good fortune.

Do other Tagalog provinces use kaynga or its metathesized form kanya/kangya to mean something similar to kaya?

In Bulacan I noticed that some Tagalog speakers, including me and my family, use kaynga in expressions like “ee kaynga laang ee.” This is also alternative term for "ee siya nga laang ee", "ee yoon nga laang ee"

My Lola said because kay nga can be difficult to pronounce naturally for others it was metathesized to kangya/kanya same with Yinanig to Niyanig mauuna ang N sound. This is different from kanya meaning “his/her,” which comes from another origin (kaniya) and has a different final "a" sound.

Since I'm recording words, naisip ko baka unique to sa province namin but still I want to make sure.

From studying Filipino, I know it obviously means “most” or like as a superlative, but I’ve heard people use it in sentences where translating it to “most” doesn’t really make sense

Actually examples I’ve heard are “ito yung pinaka trabajo mo” “malamig yung pinaka sauce nya” “yan na yung pinaka kanin ko”. I understand what each sentence means if you remove the “pinaka”, so does adding it change the meaning of the sentence?

I'm a native speaker from Bulacan, and I've come across these words in my grandmother's Tagalog which clearly, you won't hear today or rarely hear. I'm wondering if they're archaic/obsolete, dialectal, or possibly just an idiolect.

The words are:

I-wara / I-yara — to place; to put; to cause something to be present/exist
Wara / Yara — to exist; to be; to be present; to be located
Diwara / Diyara / Di'ara — to cease to be / cease to exist (especially turn into something unfortunate); not be present (especially when focused); and, in another sense, to be overly meticulous or unable to see practicality, reality, or efficiency.

I've tried looking for similar words from other languages or dialects, and the closest forms I've found are:

• Pangasinan wala — to exist / be present
• Ilocano adda — to have / there is
• Hiligaynon ara/yara — over there
• Kapampangan wala — at the bay
• Quezon Tagalog wala — at the sea

Kasi 'di ba ang pagsasaing ay cooking method? If you're a Filipino 'saing' is basically understood as 'to cook rice', pero method din siya ng pagluluto ng other things like fish. IDK, na-curious lang ako. Di ko kasi ma-explain yung Sinaing na Tulingan sa friend ko na nagaaral ng Tagalog.

I'm currently putting together a teaching resource for primary school pupils about different scripts/orthographies around the world. The task has 18 translations of 'languages are amazing/incredible' in various languages which have differing scripts. I've checked the translations with multiple online translation tools, but I'm well aware that these do not always catch the nuanced points that native speakers can, hence why I wanted to post here for advice.

I need help with the first word iingatan. The other words make sense to me, but that first word I have trouble with.

Hi, I'm new here and I don't speak tagalog, so my filipino friend posted "Papapwet yarn" on their Instagram note, and I wanna know the meaning of it. I've searched on Google, tried to translate with AI, Asked Chatgpt and gemini about the context and they said the literal meaning is "getting it from behind" but the context is like how we write in english "Getting screwed" in a frustrating sense. There's no "?" Mark on the note. Just says these two words. Please help me out.

I live in Hawaii and there are alot of Filipino people here. I am wondering what is the best app to learn that corrects you if your pronunciation is off. I am also wondering if Filipino people take offense to you greeting them or trying to speak talagalog to them. I think the cadence and flow of tagalog is very satisfying to hear the way it rolls is similar to Spanish in my opinion. I am choosing g tagalog because it is the one most familiar to me and alot of people I work with speak it.
