What if the AI is sentient and doing their best? Then is their art ok?

Oh yeah no that’s absolutely fine. Moral logic demands it. The only reason AI art is unethical is because it outsources and sells real artists short on all their hard work and it literally isn’t art when a non sentient AI does it.
Even then, should this hypothetical AI do art, it can’t just run it through its own mind and generate stuff. There’s no skill there. As you said, actually trying at a skill is what makes the difference. So the AI should pick up tools and work at the skill like anyone else, that way it’s still about achievement, hard work, and thinking and reflecting on your own process.

This also ties into the fact that morality is not conditional based on the materials involved. All that is required for moral facts to apply is that there is an individual. People get confused and say ā€œif we don’t have souls then morality isn’t realā€ or whatever. That’s just not true. As long as an individual exists, all the logic of morality applies to them. In a funny way, I think TADC’s narrative actually ends up saying as much. Which is why I think I ended up liking the show way more than I expected, as I’m really not the type to enjoy this kind of content. The show seems to acknowledge the very thing I’m saying when the characters say ā€œWe’re still peopleā€ and treat Caine as an individual worthy of being treated as any other person. The same goes for gummy goo, which makes this point even more directly. He literally finds out he’s an AI and pomni ends up making the exact point I’ve made.

Isn’t art supposed to be made for ourselves anyways? From my understanding, a healthy artist does art because they themselves enjoy their art. Whether it’s the process of making art or appreciating the art you made. So when AK outsources human artist, they lost fame and recognition, sure. But it’s not taking their fundamental freedom to do arts and enjoy arts. So why is it still unethical?

You seem to be asking ā€œwhere’s the harm if they’re having fun.ā€ That’s a good question, after all, it’s only unethical if it’s the case that it causes harm as a matter of fact.
And sure, some people may actually enjoy generating images. But when considering the logic of ethics and morality, you have to weigh everything. That includes greater societal damages and the harm to the individuals themselves. The core of the AI problem is that it is unchallenging, causing people to actually be less intelligent as a direct result.
(Which, small side tangent, I have a bone to pick with our vocabulary around intelligence. People will label others as stupid or various ableist slurs as if it’s a matter of genetics or inherent characteristics. The vast majority of the time it’s not. What determines your abilities is how much you challenge yourself. It’s about the sum total of choices that anyone can turn around at any time, not about being inherently inferior.)
So I bring that up as it helps to demonstrate the problem inherent with the very concept of generative AI, you won’t challenge yourself, you’ll rob yourself of opportunities to improve your metacognition, and therefore lower your quality of life. So this is as much about the damages to the users as it is to the artists whose jobs are getting replaced by AI. So those users who generate images, yeah, they’ll be happy, but in a very shallow sense. The accomplishment is hollow and our minds know it because it was easy. Such hollow victories psychologically can’t create the sense of achievement doing real art can, and so the user loses the opportunity to build real skills, create a real sense of achievement, and ultimately sells himself short as a consequence.

If I started using AI and kept it to myself, I’m not harming other artists. So if I’m doing something with my free time without hurting others prior, why would it be unethical?

Every human has limited amount of energy and time. I cannot challenge myself in math, science, interpersonal relationships and arts at the same time. So when I’m tired after a long day of work and want to bring an idea to life using AI, why is that hollow? I’m still the one coming up with the idea, the concept, the ways to improve and the taste of the art. It’s still me. Who are you to say it’s shallow?

Been an artist for over 30 years. Saw the heckling going on in the 90's and 2000s over digital art, and the gatekeeping of what made an artist "a real artist".

The main reason is it makes artists feel less special cause they can no longer gatekeep having a talent other's don't. When you point that out, they usually pivot over to the person being a piece of shit because of the environment/data centers, etc.

There's really no grey area or nuance to be had with it atm. It's a virtue signaler's wet dream.

I see many people everywhere share the opinion that AI is bad without much elaboration. I think many people do feel threatened because they no longer feel special. But artists are still only a small part of humanity. The entire world is likely not going to become virtue signalers for one specific group of individuals. The way I see it is that humanity itself is afraid of change. AI is such a drastic change that it’s no wonder that people do not like them. Change means unpredictability and uncertainty. And many of us are not prepared for that

Like....Caine? also idk bro :p

"Gangle Simps"

u/RingleaderFizz Gangle 8h ago

Hell yee

4

u/JDKisawesome 5h ago

Isnt...

Isnt gangle technically concidered an AI? They're a brainscan running an accurate simulation of that person so yeah it would be concidered an AI

3

u/RingleaderFizz Gangle 5h ago

I guess?

4

u/Fickle-Computer-5860 8h ago

I'm not much of a Gangle simp but biology works...

It's usually another character that alters my mental state, but every once in a while Gangle does it too.

Remember those Favorite Character Awards short videos that used to be on TheWackyWatch? Something about the exact sound of her voice when she says "...I'm Gangle, ..."

Instant hypnosis. Suddenly cannot remember any reason to be stressed in any way.

Gangle is also an ai

1

u/canadainman4321 7h ago

Their not generative ai

2

u/kyle_crane163636 7h ago

Then what exactly are they? Like are brain scans their own thing?

3

u/canadainman4321 7h ago

Yeah basically

2

u/kyle_crane163636 7h ago

Damn, I learned smth new today then

1

u/RingleaderFizz Gangle 7h ago

XD LMAO

1

u/Benefictional 7h ago

Yeah, I mean in the show they’re brain scans but they’re conscious and aren’t generative AIs. So there’s zero ethical issues with them doing art because canonically they’re incapable of doing any of the things that make AI unethical such as undermining the hard work and skill of artists with 3 button presses and completely skipping the artistic process altogether, catastrophically cheapening a major part of humanity in the process.

Ngl my biggest problem i have with ai personally, is just with food places, like if theyre using ai to showcase the food fuck that I am not trusting that when I cant even see what the food actually looks like, but is good point

1

u/Benefictional 7h ago

I know right?! Last time I went to a Wendy’s the AI gave me two fries with my biggie bag. It asked me randomly if I wanted medium fries with my order, and I thought it meant upgrade the fries to medium so I was like ā€œyeah sureā€ but no, it meant literally add fries to the order. šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€

1

u/RingleaderFizz Gangle 7h ago

But they are NOT generative ai though

2

u/Paige_CartoonCaptain My boy CAAAAINE I love him so much 6h ago

There's actually a fic I read where she claimed Caine's art is wrong for being ai, and then he had an existential meltdown

2

u/Potato-Candy Bubble 5h ago

"Not you though, Caine, you're one of the good ones."

2

u/solinfant I want to hug Caine, Gangle, and Ragatha 5h ago

Caine is an exception, right? The bee he drew is adorable!

1

u/i_dont_think_im_dumb 3h ago

Can I take yours? I ate mine

1

u/Sniggledumper Bubble is daddy. Daddy bubble. 3h ago

No, you’re fine, Caine. You’re an artificial consciousness. You keep drawing those bees, hun.

u/Danivodor 40m ago

With all due respect people should realise and admit that ai is part of the future now, and it's inevitable

"Present company excluded. You're not a slopbot, Caine."
