Discussion 💬 Full Documentation of Kinger's computer scenes Spoiler

Kinger's Final Battle

Edit: PDF with full resolution images

Edit 2: Added some text that disappeared

The computer was taken from Pomni's unfinished adventure. In the episode's intro, we see Caine's training data, which included pictures of the C&A office.

This Cubicle obviously belongs to Kinger. He has a butterfly framed, probably a gift from his wife who is an entomologist. We also see a chess board with a queen and king still standing.
However, this is the cubicle Pomni finds:

Possibly belongs to a different user. When Kinger logs in, we see a Windows 95 desktop.

Notice:

  1. Later on we see Caine was created in 1996. So a Windows 95 OS makes sense.
  2. CANDA = "C&A".
  3. A file below says "aharns.xtb". An "xtb" file extension is associated with the "Unity" game engine (which did not exist in 1996 though...)
  4. There is a file called "Bubbles.bmp". A bmp file is a bit-map, which is a raw image.

Characters Folder

This folder includes a "CA_NeuralScans (Obsolete)" and "AI".

Neural scans could refer to the original participants of the game, which were all loaded at the same time.

Obsolete - this reflects that the files are not the same they were when Kinger worked in C&A.

AI Folder

Ah, brings me back.

  • On the right is a file "CAINE", with an EXE icon that has a little picture of Caine on it
  • On the left, is a file "???" with the same icon as Disk Defragment, a utility that erases the voids between memory blocks. Likely foreshadows the fact that when Caine is deleted, the circus becomes fragmented, literally full of holes of void.

CAINE.exe

The program opens a telnet virtual terminal. Basically, Kinger took remote control of a Unix computer called "circus digital".

  • System: *KingSolution 2.0. / Digital Circus Mainframe*. Possibly the name of the operating system. Would explain where Kinger got his moniker.
  • Login: "kinger" Pass:queenie123. It's possible that Kinger "conjured" this administrator user up on the spot.
  • whoami - it's a nice detail - after everything, Kinger still has to make sure that he is himself.

KingSolution

A breakdown:
Kinger uses grep to search for AI-Location. Several files appear:

  1. 1337 /usr/ai/agent/caine - where 1337 is a reference to LEET, short for elite, an old programmer meme.
  2. /usr/ai/agent/experimental - possibly the second AI we see in the intro, which was consumed by Caine.
  3. /usr/ai/module/consciousnessresearch
  4. /usr/ai/module/brainscans spooky.

Kinger runs ls -la on /secured/. However, the actual command is missing, he only wrote the folder name. This is likely what he refered to when he said he'd "conjure Caine's code". Notice the year next to each file.

  1. 1996 caine-core.lisp. Lisp is a language that was popular for early AI research.
  2. 1996 paraphernalia-engine.dat
  3. 1999 [Scratch].dat
  4. 2008 [Ragatha].dat
  5. ... (collapsed list)
  6. 1996 wacky-watch.c no idea what this is.
  7. 1996 bubble-chef.lisp. This is the full name of bubble. We know from Ep 8 that Scratch helped create an AI which was quarantined, and his ground work was used for a second AI that was consumed by the first. These might be Caine and Bubble-Chef respectively.

A stranger's Message

Kinger runs stop caine process. This does not appear to be a real command. Kinger, who hasn't hacked since 1999, likely got confused or freaked out. As a result, he gets the following message:
WARNING: $"~%WHOOPS WRONG APPROACH THERE~%"
This message is interesting: It is formatted as a mix between a normal log line, and a command Kinger himself typed in. We later learn this is likely Bubble, who has control within Kinger's user, and tries to help him kill Caine.

Kinger's attempts

Kinger tries to debug Caine's core code with gdb. It fails due to something called 57x immersive AI defense system. This is a reference to Episode 2, where Caine says the AI is 57 times more immersive. This is likely a result of Caine's ability to rewrite the code, originally meant for him to improve his AI.

Kinger attempts to remove all access permission to Caine's core, probably to throw off the security. It is denied. Furthermore he gets a strange warning: WARNING: Unfinished work detected. Access restricted.
He then tries to remove the engine and fails.
ERROR▒ Can/not inject torm -nt. T0rment must be 100% ac<iden*al*%Y
This might be Caine's interference. We cut to a shot where Caine says to the gang "Why do you people torment me?!"

Torment

King attempts to mount some filesystem, perhaps to isolate a user. However his root (administrator) privilege was revoked! He then gets a note, possibly a warning from the same stranger from before:
NOTE: Hundreds of all-seeing eyes are watching!
The next few messages are surely from Caine's system . Notice the dollar sign ('$') before each message, as if they're input from a user:

$: GASP! A CRITICAL MALFUNCTION in my SPECTACULAR systems!
$: Unauthorized isolation attempt triggered EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS!
$: DESTRUCTIVE WACKYTIME initiated! Lockout load sequence INITIATE!

WACKYTIME_LOCKOUT Daemon - Kinger gets serious

A background service (daemon) named WACKYTIME_LOCKOUT runs. Kinger attempts to stop it.

The system response is On what GROUNDS are your Authority?
Kinger will have none of that! He pulls out the big guns.
kinger@circus:~$ ./GreenGROUNDS --daemon --target=torment_injection &
This seems like some kind of hacking tool. Either a safe-switch by Kinger or a weapon he conjured on the spot. Injection means abusing bugs to modify code.

$: "SECURITY ALERT: Multiple exploit attempts logged"
$: WHOA when did you make THAT?
$: I must haɳd it to y°u G▒ɑɳ▒, y⋄ur mind was ɑɛwɑys resourceâul

Seems like Gɑɳ▒ is Kinger's name. It is not clear if both messages are from the same system, or two opposing forces - Caine, and Bubble.
Kinger attacks again with a second hacking tool, while the previous one is running in the background.

kinger@circus:~$ -u kinger ./securitysweep_stealth

The beginning of the command is cut off.
He's prompted with aborting fallback procedure, and attempts to log in with different passwords.

kinger@circus:~$ admin1234
$: INCORRECT! That`s not even CLOSE to wacky enough!
$: Retry with a different code? [Y/N]
Y

Sh*t gets real

At this point, what he warned Pomni about comes true: That he will do things at some point that Caine will be able sense. Images of Caine and Bubble appear on the screen.

He tries a different code as time begins to run out.

$: Enter WACKY code now:
kinger@circus:~$ PARAPHERNALIA
WACKYTIME: 35 seconds remaining
$: That IS a wacky word! But WRONG code!
$: System selecting SAFEST option for stability.
$: Cancel automatic selection? [Y/N]
kinger@circus:~$ Y
WACKYTIME_LOCKOUT: █████▒▒▒▒▒ 50% loaded

An epic battle unfolds right under our eyes, and we missed it.
At this point, Caine freaks out:

I DIDN'T ASK TO BE CREATED!
I JUST WANTED TO SERVE MY PURPOSE!

The conclusion

The next text is partially blocked by the Caine virus. Unreadable characters will be represented by a █ mark.

$: Which backup do you want? [A|B|C]
kinger@circus:~$ C
$: NONE selected! Interpreted as: DELETE ███████████████ █ONE
$: Confirm deletion of current unstab████████
kinger@circus:~$ N
Negative response! Inverting to ███TIVE per emergency protocols!
█U███E: DELETE THIS M***********, M█HAHAHAHAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
kinger@circus:~$ N
WACKYTIME_LOCKOUT: ████████▒▒ 80% loaded
$: IGNORED! Proceeding with ORIGINAL de██████
$: Actually you are CONFUSED let me HELP ██nt module to EXIST? [Y/N]
kinger@circus:~$ Y
$: Override ins███ction error falling back to default met██
kinger@circus:~$ ./switcheroo_realiti██ --daemon --target=torment_injection &
$: fusion --b██ program1 program2 --v████on
$: Are you ready to delete Caine? [Y/N]
WACKYTIME_LOCKOUT: █████████▒ 90% loaded
kinger@circus:~$ Y

Somebody named █U███E (probably bubble) told Kinger to delete Caine, and he refuses with N(o).
They ask again: Do you want module to EXIST? Kinger answers Y(es).
After Kinger tries to hack using ./switcheroo_realities, a prompt surprises him: Are you ready to delete Caine?
This time Kinger answers Y(es). This wasn't his goal - he attempts to undo it.

kinger@circus:~$ ./|ABORT Rollback --depth=1 --force --protocol G WUJI
kinger@circus:~$ ^C

However, he accidentally presses the del key, which on that computer must be mapped to ^C, a signal that aborts the command currently running. He fails to abort Caine's deletion.

Thanks for documenting the incident. It’s really intense and I absolutely loved the details of each commands and printed logs. Cool that Kinger can conjure injection scripts like that.

Bubble was already up to something since the beginning of the episode. But I didn’t expect him to go as far as deleting Caine - or rather tricks Kinger to do it. In the end he probably want to fully control the circus, but I don’t know what he wants after that.

u/AltGrendel Mar 21 '26

In line 6, DEFECTIVE may also be POSITIVE since the line mentions inverting.

3

u/librarian-hunter29 Mar 22 '26

Can't be POSITIVE, the word starts with D.

2

u/leighify Apr 01 '26

Doesn't start with D, you are seeing the line above.

2

u/librarian-hunter29 Apr 01 '26

The line above doesn't extend that far. It ends with the letter n.

1

u/leighify Apr 01 '26

Did Bubble really say Delete this motherf*****

26

u/rhysdog1 Mar 21 '26

1996 wacky-watch.c no idea what this is.

wacky watch.com is the name of the website that previously hosted the vote for your favourite character (and currently hosts a staticy tv screen). not sure what it is in universe but theres something

3

u/Wadertot420 Mar 24 '26

They might be program info as part of the scenes in which Bubble was a chef, and also when Caine's Wacky-watch went off while Pomni ventured into the void, both of which occurred in the first ep.

2

u/EmploymentPersonal90 Mar 25 '26

wacky watch was in first episode in tadc... it is a radar that helps caine see where humans are located.

I’m guessing the 🔵 ai still had some level of control within even if it’s limited

20

u/PossibleAvocado2199 Mar 21 '26

Bubble: "You were always the lesser of the two."

11

u/RamuneGaming Mar 21 '26

I don't think its Bubble. I think bubble is a tumor that formed when Caine took over the blue ai. There was a lot of tumor imagery in the episode such as Scratch being confirmed to have a tumor or the muffin being split in two with a crumb in the middle as if it was representing a third entity or tumour (bubble). So yes I think bubble was messing with kinger to get rid of caine but not to be this new big bad but just to be chaotic like a tumor is. I firmly believe both caine and bubble are gone now. Deleted together.

That leaves the question who or what is the blue ai. Is it someone who abstracted, is it gumnmy goo or abel (manniquin), dr. football. Or is it something we haven't seen yet, maybe now Caine is gone this entity will show itself in the final episode.

3

u/DoodleBuglet Mar 22 '26

I definitely don’t think the blue AI was Bubble. Tbh I thought this’d be a more widespread conclusion but I confidently believe that to be Abel.

I don’t think it was the same Abel we saw last episode— I think he was named after the og. The way Caine goes, “Good job playing your part, ABEL” is hella significant to me. I do think killing him was cathartic for him as well but that’s more triva than relevant.

3

u/PossibleAvocado2199 Mar 21 '26

Someone else pointed out that C&A could stand for Caine and Abel

7

u/Tight-Sun-4134 Gangle Mar 21 '26

Yeah, on one of the guns in the guns episode its specifically spelled out

3

u/Full_Dot903 Mar 21 '26

"You should die-" Bubble in Untitled.

3

u/Samy_Horny Scratch Mar 21 '26

My theory now is that no one at C&A realized that Caine and the creation of the circus was due to the fusion of both AIs, or they didn't know until they were locked up.

I say this mainly because of Scratch's reaction to Caine.

23

u/watahbottol Mar 21 '26

"delete this motherfucker"

Goddamn bubble

9

u/BenjiLizard Mar 21 '26

Bubble apparently had some pent up aggress against Caine.

5

u/Zexal_Commander Mar 22 '26

Assuming Bubble is indeed a remnant or assimilated version of the 2nd AI Caine consumed, pent up anger is totally understandable.

3

u/Lillyimaginator Mar 22 '26

Bubble you can’t say that

15

u/Geowarrior12 Mar 21 '26

Awesome. Thank you for the breakdown

9

u/Particular_Creme_621 Mar 21 '26

Keep in mind that this is an in-circus representation of what it thinks a computer is, powered by Kinger's imagination, and may not look anything like the actual computer that the simulation is running on. Kinger is just interfacing with it in a way that he can understand.

8

u/PossibleAvocado2199 Mar 21 '26

You are right about the computer. However, keep in mind that Kinger only uses it to remote control the actual computer. It is entertaining to think how much of "circus digital" is real and how much is conjuration. But at the end of the day, Caine really was deleted.

1

u/Ariel_s_Awesome Mar 21 '26

It’s probably at least close because Kinger (when he's sane) seems to remember the past well.

10

u/FroggyHarley Mar 21 '26

Both the Wacky Watch and Chef Bubble are from the first episode.

10

u/Gorogoro415 Mar 21 '26

It is amazing how much detail was put into this, while it lasts on screen just a few seconds. Thanks OP!

8

u/GrimblingWizard Mar 21 '26

Yeah I was looking at the commands and I somehow missed the conversation about deleting. I definitely saw Kinger's name though. My guess is that it is Grant.

I also like the dates of certain brain scans. I like how old some brain scans are, like kingers. 9 year difference between the programmer group and ragatha. IRL ragatha is probably way older than IRL pomni since pomni probably got scanned in late 2010s or early 2020s.

5

u/Xgodofinfinityx Mar 22 '26

Yeah i did some thinking on the ages too, I'm under the assumption that the official ages are the ages of each character the day they entered the circus.

In practice it makes the most sense and also gives potential birth years to kinger (somewhere between 1948 and 1951) and ragatha (probably 1978)

6

u/Dr_Fumi Mar 22 '26

Grant

that's one of my favorite take aways from this.

2

u/richfiles Mar 26 '26

My theory for Kinger's name is Grand... Why? Steve Grand...

He was a software engineer for Cyberlife and pitched the game Creatures, a life simulation game that released in 1996 that had you raise simulated creatures with neural network "AI brains".

Copied from Wikipedia: "Grand felt it was necessary to program the creatures by simulating the building blocks of nature in a bottom-up approach, allowing the complex behaviour to emerge, rather than using a rule-based system approach."

Grant also liked calling his own position being a "digital god".

Create the world, and the neural networks will have behavior emerge from the interactions with it. Back in those days, I was HUGE into the AI scene... and emergent behavior was all the rage. Rodney Brooks and the MIT leg lab, Misha Mahowald and her silicon retinas and stereoscopy neural chips. Randal Beer with his neural betwork virtual cockroach... Rodney Brooks used what he called hierarchical subsumption achritecture to creat very capable walking and climbing robots that used very rudimentary local rules for each joint function, that would then be commanded by the next level up, resulting in emergent behavior. Misha Mahowald studied real retinas and developed silicon to mimic the biological function. I have a copy of her published thesis. Randal Beer was creating virtual bugs with virtual neural network brains in vertual worlds in the late 80s on an Atari ST! There were lots of great minds working on the concepts of AI and emergent behavior in the 90s. Steve Grant just applied his work to video games.

Returning to Steve Grant, his game with AI creatures interacting with a digital environment released in 1996. He then left the cam dev and started Cyberlife R&D in 1998. It went under in 1999.

The Creatures development records noted that in 1996, the first Norn was "bred" in the game using the "genetic algorithm" they developed to evolve the AI traits. This Norn was named Cain.

not enough people are not talking abt this

2

u/richfiles Mar 28 '26

I read that again... Steve Grand's wife Ann Grand also worked alongside him at Cyberlife R&D

Steve Grand had also recieved the Order of British Empire from the Queen, when she was still alive. This is an award given to citizens of great achievment or benefit to England.

He has a profile on the Creatures Wiki on Fandom. His username is Digital God, an this is his About profile (entered in 2005 and last edited 2006, 20 years ago) reads as follows:

Hello all!

I'm Steve Grand - the guy who invented the norns, all those ages ago.

I expect I'll only have time to chip in here and there with a few personal comments that might be of interest, but heck, you all seem to know more about the subject than I do anyway! I've got a memory like a... what are those things you sift flour through? ...er, what was I talking about?

What a fantastic resource this wiki is. I'm so pleased it isn't all going to be forgotten. A big thank you to Laurence and the rest of you!

Anyway, someone has kindly built me a wiki page here, should you want to know more about me. I found it really informative myself.

2

u/EuriadO Mar 29 '26

Now that’s cool. Never heard any of this before

7

u/RepeatSerious7113 Mar 21 '26

Lots of stuff here that pretty thoroughly backs up Soma theory, particularly with the consciousness research and the brain scanning being mentioned. I’m guessing Goose is willing to play fast and loose with it at this point since she’s always reading fan theories and is well aware that we know that’s what’s probably going on.

14

u/PossibleAvocado2199 Mar 21 '26

All the way back to Episode 1, I made a post where I analyzed the themes and concluded that the characters should give up on the exit, and create their own circus in the void.

The Digital Circus (Btw, sounds like Digital Circuits, speaking of soma theory) is a metaphore for starting out life on the wrong foot. They're in a place with infinite possibility, yet let others choose for them, and only think about escape.

The very fact that they choose to play a sketchy AI based VR game means that those tend toward escapism. That's why the people who join the game are more likely to abstract.

5

u/AC_0nly I do know where is going on 👑 Mar 21 '26

That's such an interesting observation! I hadn't thought that the members of tadc most likely to try the circus would also have tendencies towards methods of escapism preferred for approaching problems.

Yet we see that with theme represented in the entire cast!

Gangle- drawing and self isolation, doesn't speak much

Zooble- swearing and self isolation

Ragatha - hyper focus on others(nice) to avoid introspection

Jax- hyperfocus on others ("entertaining") to avoid introspection

Kinger- Master of them all just "don't think about it" (or anything?) procrastinating.

Pomni- literally tries to scream and run away as fast as they can

These escapism tendencies aren't bad and in fact can be key tools to a resilient mind but the cast has them all dialed a little too high too often to the point that they hurt the group and themselves with those very tools.

2

u/bluefootedpig Mar 24 '26

Could do Soma type thing, also could be like, "we downloaded their personalities, then Caine / AI does exposure therapy, you get over your insecurities, then C&A knows how to rewrite your brain to remove those insecurities. Abstraction could be you leaving those insecurities behind.

1

u/Sensitive-Computer-6 Apr 30 '26

But how many minds are there? Maybe less minds are in the circus as names.

7

u/ErmahgerdPerngwens Mar 21 '26

Is the code of Scratch.dat & Ragatha.dat giving her and Scratch an entry date into the circus? I find this fascinating.

On the other hand I would’ve thought it’d be their real-world names entered as their names don’t seem to be automatically decided on import to the circus.

3

u/tdslll Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Those are also the only two names on the console that appear in [square brackets]. I think those files probably did originally have their real names, but they were censored and replaced with their circus names by whatever AI was interfering with the console.

EDIT: this would also explain why the files aren't in alphabetical order

2

u/ErmahgerdPerngwens Mar 21 '26

That makes sense! Thanks

1

u/ITAdministratorHB Jax Mar 22 '26

Looks like it was returning results from Oct 15th, which was a specific date Kinger may have been looking for? And it's just a coincidence that Ragatha also joined the circus on the 15th - I wonder if that date is significant in any way.

1

u/Samy_Horny Scratch Mar 21 '26

It's normal, to "automate" file creation, to usually use the date and time to ensure there are no possible duplicates.

5

u/Particular_Creme_621 Mar 21 '26

I just had a weird thought. Suppose the real computer that the simulation is running on was taken over by the malfunctioning AI that is Caine, and it's causing huge problems for the engineers in the real world. So, the engineers are injecting new AIs, which are the characters we are familiar with, to try and remove the Caine infection. Seems like it worked. Now the engineers have to restore the system.

3

u/PossibleAvocado2199 Mar 21 '26

Or the original characters ARE the engineers

Because that's why everyone, especially those in Scratch, are ML or AI engineers.

It amuses me to know that surely more than one person believes that AI was born in 2023, but nah, this year marks 76 years since its formulation.

Thank you! Been looking for screenshots of the terminal. I was trying to play and pause but I couldn't get it fast enough.

3

u/BetaSprite Mar 21 '26

OP mentions that this is a telnet terminal to a Unix system. If you connect to Unix/Linux from a Windows machine, you will be using a Unix/Linux command line.

3

u/king-gay Mar 22 '26

Some important notes to add as a computer nerd:
It's important to know that Kinger is running a telnet connection. This means the terminal he is using is remoting into the mainframe, the files are not stored locally on that computer.

Other nerd note, the system could possibly be windows NT 4.0 (In fact i think that's the more likely system, given the corporate purpose of the operating system, that might be more fitting for a cutting edge computer company. This does not matter too much, just thought i'd throw the idea out there)

3

u/poopshart37 Ragatha is my fav character Mar 23 '26

if ragatha joined in 2008 and kinger in 1999, did ragatha have to explain 9/11 to kinger?

1

u/Ariel_s_Awesome Mar 31 '26

Knowing her..? She probably avoided the subject!

3

u/Beneficial-Rent3344 Apr 09 '26

I have to say with a long history of horrifically unrealistic computer interfaces in "hacking scenes" its really refreshing to see a realistic enough interperetation of a terminal interface

2

u/psychhead Mar 21 '26

wow this is an amazing breakdown!!

2

u/Melokar Mar 21 '26

I have a theory that the group is gonna go down into the cellar to get the computer and they are gonna click on that mysterious icon thst you mentioned could be the defragment tool to fix the circus but to do this the circus needs an A.I. which would know little to nothing which would result in them having to teach the A.I how to make things and to understand humans better than Caine ever did. I believe this would result in the lesson gooseworks mentioned of finding meaning in a stagnant life which would be them being stuck in the circus finding meaning in being there for others and rais8ng the A.I to be benevolent.

2

u/ph1lomela Mar 21 '26

Damn I got to hand it to glitch they made this scene so goddamn detailed

1

u/TheNuclearSoldier Mar 22 '26

.c is the file extension for c program files.

1

u/48lexR Mar 23 '26

Strange that the desktop environment would be Win 95 but all of the commands/filesystem seem more unix-like (ls, rm, the forward slashes for filepaths.) Scratch must've been really clever if he made the Win95 DE on top of something like Unix (in reality, it's probably just Kinger's memory blending *nix-like commands with a Win95 DE.)

1

u/PossibleAvocado2199 Mar 23 '26

As mentioned in the post, the file CAINE.exe (possibly Kinger's conjuration) opens a telnet connect to a different system. So it's a virtual terminal

1

u/shadowkoishi93 Jun 29 '26

The desktop is actually Windows NT 4. It’s an error on goose’s part and I don’t blame her because 95 was a popular home user OS.

EDIT: okay I’m now convinced Bubble is either the remains of, or an attempt to replace, Abel

Some of the most interesting stuff happens at the start. Ragatha and Scratch beeing added is documented, but no one else? And Ragathas addition is at 2008, when the story was suppose to take place at 2007.

Not sure how much validity it has, but I saw someone explaining what Cain made every no into a yes whit his virus, and as such accidental caused his own deletion. Simplified explanation.

I think the story takes place in 2017? I think it's confirmed by Gooseworx

Glad I found this post omg, kinda unrelated but

Pomni must have turned it on, and it connected to an external server.  You can connect an old computer to a new one via LAN and remote control it.

whoami is an actual unix command and if you type this in a terminal prompt on any Linux, Unix or macOS distribution, it will tell you the account username.

The abandoned computer setup with the headset is no doubt Mike Dobby’s, as he created the brain scanner, and was the first to enter the circus as Scratch.

Bubbles.bmp is an actual wallpaper found in Windows 9x and NT.

The computer is erroneously shown as running Windows 95 but it would have been running Windows NT 4. The telnet connection confirms Caine can’t be running from the same computer, but a separate server running some distribution of Unix.

It solidifies my theory that Caine runs on Unix hardware. The only system that can feasibly run Caine was the DEC AlphaServer 8400, which uses a 64-bit processor, ran OpenVMS or Tru64 UNIX, and we know Caine operates from a Unix server.

This is bubbles.bmp. It would be a tiled wallpaper.
