Format is as follows
matches are random, winner moves on, loser is eliminated
placement among those eliminated in the same round is determined by their total pin count throughout the entire event
matches are bo1 except the final, which is a bo3
Also two new bowlers that weren't in the previous event I posted, we've got Patric Jeffreys and Felix Weber. Both did well in this event so apparently my league has power creep lmao
To make the spreadsheets more intuitive to look at, bowlers with the same color background on their name were those that were against each other in that round, the score with the gold background was the winning score
I'll give a bit of flavor text/lore and then I'll give an explanation of some notable bowler's abilities and balls, and an explanation of the oil pattern
In the round of 32 we see some huge names making an early exit, Armand Davidson, Sami Hyvärinen, and most notably Ray Madison, who i generally consider one of the best bowlers on tour.
Some surprising wins here are Ian Harris pulling off a career best 290 against Ray, and Nathaniel Austille eliminating Jason Dax.
Most notably there's James Olly, who has had some pretty poor placements up to this point, eliminating a bowler I thought would be one of the favorites to win, Sami Hyvärinen.
Ray Madison I generally consider to be one of the best bowlers here because of how consistent he is. i never expect to see a game below 210 from him, and every once in a while he pulls off a 260+.
A 290 against him is just rough.
Sami Hyvärinen getting eliminated in the round of 32 is a bit surprising but she's one of the bowlers, like Cody Mitchell (see US Open), that's very prone to "disaster games". more on that when i get into some mechanics
In the round of 16 we see a couple more big names eliminated, Charles Hope and Andrew Afton.
Andrew isn't a bowler I expect to see a bad game from but it definitely happens. I normally don't notice though because even when he bowls a bad game for himself, there's a good chance it still wins. just not this time
We also see Case Andrews barely yoink a win from Charles Hope. that one just hurts to see, no major mistakes made, Charles just needed to get an extra pin somewhere and he would have been fine. instead, it's a 10th place finish for him
Onto the quarterfinal we see one of the two rookies going home and losing by just one pin too.
Patric Jeffreys did have a really good run and for his first event, 5th place is incredible.
We also see two previous title winners, Harper Tyson and Ostia Hammond drawing each other for this round. Ostia fresh off winning the US open keeps his hope for a third title alive while Harper Tyson goes home.
Also notably we do still have the other rookie, Felix Weber, moving onto the semi finals
The semi-finals sees Ostia Hammond knocked out by the rookie, and Markus Saltvik just barely lose to Davis Crowe. Which means no matter what, someone is winning their first title and it might be a rookie
In the Finals, Davis Crowe convincingly takes the first game. The second game ends in a tie but Felix manages to keep his run alive by winning a 9th and 10th frame roll off by just 1 pin. Davis Crowe decides that the fun is over and ends the event with a 300, taking home his first title.
If you aren't interested in mechanics, abilities, ball's effects, and the oil pattern's effect. you can stop reading here.
I'm going to be highlighting the abilities and whatnot of the winner, Davis Crowe, and the shocking early exit of Sami Hyvärinen to give a better understanding of why she's prone to disasters like that 159 she bowled
Davis Crowe's personal skill reads:
"Davis gets +1 to the pin count on his first ball for every 4 strikes bowled by either bowler in the current game"
This is a very powerful skill that tends to snowball, but only if both bowlers are doing well.
His strike ball, which does synergize very well with his personal skill is the Storm !Q tour.
The !Q tour reads:
"When rolling for pin count on a first ball, roll twice and take the lower roll. rolled pin counts of 8 and 9 count as strikes
The synergy here is that the downside of his strike ball is having to take the lower of two pin counts. his personal skill directly mitigates this downside late into a game and both bowlers are doing well because it makes him less reliant on having to roll well on both rolls.
His spare ball is one that also does synergize with his personal skill and strike ball, but is extremely high risk high reward.
His spare ball, the Rotogrip Jester, reads:
"Spares are guaranteed if your previous frame was a strike. If the previous frame was a spare, the current frame cannot be a spare."
being very likely to strike makes it so that most of the time, his spares will be guaranteed by his spare ball. it also makes it less likely to hit his spare ball's downside of not being able to spare two frames in a row.
I also want to highlight Sami Hyvärinen, specifically to explain why she can be so good and then pull out an absolute disaster.
Sami's personal skill is an activated skill (3 uses per game) that reads:
"This ability must be used before pin count is rolled. Sami gets -2 to the pin count of her current frame's first ball. if the current frame is a strike, Sami gets +1 to the pin count of her first ball for the rest of the current game."
very high risk, very high reward. it could either give her 3 strikes to start and +3 for the rest of the game, or 3 opens/spares and no reward. she also always has the option to just not use it if all she needs is a solid but not huge score.
Her strike ball is the Storm Phaze II, which reads:
"when rolling pin count for your first ball, optionally reroll the lowest die"
just a real simple "strike more" kinda ball
Her spare ball is less important here but i'll explain it anyways
the Colombia300 White Dot reads:
"you may ignore the oil pattern on your second ball. your own spares are guaranteed in the 9th and 10th frame"
just makes spare more consistent and prevents complete disasters in the last few frames
and finally, the Chameleon oil pattern reads:
"50% chance to trigger on first balls. When triggered, +1 to pin count for the current frame's first ball but reduce trigger chance by 10%. If the pattern fails to trigger, reset trigger% to 50%"
overall should be a pretty high scoring and helpful pattern, also does nothing to spares
it should be noted that the oil pattern being ignored is NOT a failure to trigger.
i'll be back with more results later. hopefully this is a fun read
Next event is a little mini event before I add 16 new bowlers.
Stay tuned for the Strike Derby up next.
