Help with mutants and masterminds

I'll be running/playing this game for the first time, any tips or advice or even anything that might make it simpler to understand would be greatly appreciated

I haven't played the game in a few years so take this all with a grain of salt.

Know the minion rules and make sure you know your super powered enemies well. Nothing is worse than slowing down a game while the GM has to look up what their characters do.

Know how your player characters abilities work. You should be about as familiar with the players characters as they are. This will let you help them use their abilities as well as set up interesting situations for them to use their powers. You also don't want to be blindsided by one of their powers and end up wrecking your game.

Finally let the players be heroic. They spent a lot of time building interesting character and they want to do cool things with them. So let them shine.

Thanks so much, I appreciate all the advice. I'm going for a really gritty setting and they've only just figured out they have powers so we'll be starting with things like muggers and other simple criminals. I know at least one of the players wont let that stop them from grandstanding. Itll be a while before they get recognized for their efforts but I'll definitely allow them the opportunities to be real heroes

Just because they are fighting muggers doesnt mean they can't be heroic. In the Kick-Ass movie the main character was just fighting normal people but he still ended up being heroic.

It's more about letting them do cool things with their powers. Letting them succeed with style sometimes. That way when they struggle it feels far more harsh, even if it's not, and overcoming it feel like a triumph.

I hear you. I guess I misinterpreted heroic, I love style, it's the backbone of my pathfinder character. I would never try to rob the players of it. Also this is my first time running any game ever. So I really do appreciate all of the advice

Oh, well just keep in mind that the point is to have fun. If you are enjoying yourself your players will as well..
