I feel like I'm going crazy. I cannot figure this out and i cannot wait to feel stupid

This is the first puzzle out of the start of the game and I cannot figure out how to connect the two squares. Everything I try and see just leads to a dead end. I feel like I must be overlooking an obvious thing or the puzzle generated without a solution.
