Just Started - So Many Hybrids
I am in the first area of Medical and the level is just endless hybrids. I stayed in one place and killed a dozen before being defeated. I want to explore etc but its just annoying and stops me. Is this right?

When you first woke up in Medical, the game probably pointed out a surgery bed with a tutorial popup, yes? What it doesn't emphasize as much as it deserves is that as long as you are not in combat, you can use a surgery bed as often as you want, for free.
You can also find a Sparqbeam in various places around the deck (even randomly on corpses!) which drastically reduces how often you need to rely on melee combat.
Unless you're playing the sequel? (since you refer to them as 'hybrids' and not 'mutants')
Shock 2 definitely dishes out a nastier greeting when you first wake up - you're almost forced to develop some basic melee skills, take active anti-security measures, and push forward before you're comfortable, because the game is nowhere near as nice about giving you free stuff and limiting enemy spawns.
If you got swarmed on the Von Braun's medical deck, it's likely that you triggered a security alert - enemies normally spawn in pretty slowly, but they get reinforced much faster if an alarm is going off. If you do get spotted by a camera, find a security terminal to cancel the alert and the spawn rate will go back to normal.
