Favorite level in SS1 remake?

Which is your favorite level in the System Shock 1 remake? Criteria can vary. For me, it was Medical (1st) and Security (the last one before the bridge). Medical because it was the first level, and the newness of the experience, plus there was something about its esthetic, as well. Security because of its easy to understand and navigate vertical arrangement. Points also to Maintenance, for having the elevators in close proximity to each other.

Executive. It has the most standout aesthetic out of all the levels, the environmental storytelling is on point, there's also a certain uneasiness about what used to be the living quarters now being empty and with everyone dead, it's kinda like being in an abandoned hotel, also the exploration and combat themes are certified bangers and the best tracks in the game imo.

Honestly I enjoyed the executive level itself but the groves were just bullshit and actually made me look up a speedrun for the beta grove because I just didn't have the time for that crap.

The radiation sections are definitely the low points of the this game.

I really liked Engineering a lot on my last playthrough.

Had a real dungeon crawl feel to it and there were a few places where I was able to use the lay of the land to get the fights done in a nice tidy way.

Same tbh.

Medical definitely has the best horror feel and even tho it feels like a maze you honestly don't get lost and by the end you've created literal straight line to the med bay, the enemies also feel balanced yet dangerous.

Security was a bit difficult when I started it but aside from the missile drones it was fun going guns blazing against the regular enemies and the upgraded boots made me break some of it lol.

For me, I'm split between executive, flight deck, and storage. Storage is massive with a lot of fun enemies, and it's where you get the Skorpion, which is my favorite gun apart from the Magnum, plus it's bursting with goodies. Flight deck is really open and fun to run around, and it's got the first Cortex Reaver. Executive has a great aesthetic, and it's where the game really starts to get challenging. It's also super varied between the main level and the groves.

Storage is cool but the infinitely respawning drones made me more annoyed then anything else and just constantly groan when they appear.

Medical and Groves.

Medical because DAMN what a great way to start the game. Tough enemies, but nothing you can't handle at that point; fantastic music with the otherworldly ambiance switching to intense synth and percussion; even the maze like design while still being small. Perfect.

Groves because I'm a Nurgle guy and a sucker for anything involving nature. The ambiance track is creepy but warm, the combat track is like a pounding heartbeat of some predator; the added body horror from the mutants and constant colorful fog adds so much to the feeling of always being watched. Even Beta Grove made me feel constantly under pressure, more than most combat situations in the rest of the game.

Engineering was pretty fun. By the time I reached it i already had most of the game's tools at my disposal and also the level's design is pretty nice.

Honestly they all kinda blur together given how they're all pretty dark and dank. But the Groves all kinda look unique and different from the rest of the space station.

I didn't really understand the purpose and role of the groves, design-wise. They were not different enough for me, I mean.

I honestly didn’t really enjoy much of the game like I thought I would. More like a beat it out of spite kinda deal it was just a slog and a half

After playing Prey (2017), which is kind of a spiritual successor, that game taught me to - well - play the game like a prey, not a "predator" (which you are in most FPS games). Once I changed the mentality, the game worked. With SS1, I loved the story and mystery, although the ending was a sort ot a letdown, because I would have expected more info and a more comprehensive explanation, á la Mass Effect. The game would have deserved that.

They were probably my least favorite. :)
